Woah, those Bryston’s are no slouches. Ever thought of just sending them in for the “cubed” upgrade?
Yes good idea, but Bryston is unable to upgrade the squared version to the cubed. Gotta buy new.
TJ - I will do once I get some good listening hours with it. Unfortunately I’m heading out of state for a few days and won’t get back to listening until next week. But I can say early impressions are very positive. I loved my old White but this is a huge step up in bass, stage depth (front to back) and totally making my speakers disappear.
Sounds like great first impressions. My only concern is whether the 250.8 would be sufficient to drive a pair of Maggies.
What is the efficiiency rating for your speakers? And how big is your room?
Cheers. TJ
Hej min ven det er så et PROBLEM for PS audio så må de jo sende nye rør
av min arm
TJ - I have Shahinian Hawks speakers, they’re rated at 87 db sensitivity. I’m not sure how that compares to the Maggies. My guess though at 250 watts, staying in Class A up to 16 watts, could drive just about anything. Sure there are speakers that would be tough for many amps, but my unscientific guess is the x-250.8 could drive most loads.
heyya Paul, i know there’s been some good discussion on this phenomena of volume control noise.
I generally understand the gain stage concept, and critical levels of ‘26’ or so and 52 on the digital volume level indicator.
but for the last three days or so, the BHK volume control makes noise at every click. it’s very noticeable and kind of a pain in the butt.
is there a cure for this? I’ve tried shutting the system down and restarting, but no change.
should i take out the tubes, rub them gently, and replace?
any suggestions appreciated!
thanks all
TJ
Certainly won’t hurt to turn off the whole system and reset everything. Do you know how many hours you have on the tubes?
I think tube matching and especially triode to triode matching within each tube is critical.
how do i check the hours on the tubes??
i am using the PS Audio factory tubes. I am guessing they are matched properly…and it never used to click at every volume increment until just recently. hummmm…
If you hold the input button for a few seconds, you’ll enter the settings. Then do faster presses to get to the timer.
ok…just figured it out.
i have 258 hours on the tubes (and preamp).
T
That’s hardly any time at all. And this just started happening? How loud is it compared to the normal ones at 26 and 52?
I am having the same issue! In mainly in the left channel only though- very faint in right. 56 hours on stock tubes. I made a video, does it sound like mine? I swapped tubes left to right to see if that’s the issue and it didn’t change the loud pops in left channel. You can hear the relay click on the 26 and 52 settings in the video. Man, the pre sounds good though. My 3yo daughter even asked me “why is it clicking so loud?” haha
Cheers
Yep. Just started happening this week. The sound of the clicking is less apparent than the 26/52 pop.
It sounds similar to what ‘grateful’ just posted on the vid - but i have Maggies, and the sound is a little larger. definitely noticeable…and would love it if this sound goes away!
Yikes! When 3 year olds start picking up on your whacky HiFi audio issues then you know for sure you really have a whacky HiFi audio issue.
come to think if it…i did switch my interconnects around the other day. i will switch them back and see if the sounds persists…
wow…call me Mr. TroubleShooter!
a few days ago, i swapped out my balanced cables for single ended - connecting from the BHK preamp to the power amp. that was the culprit.
soon as I put the XLR’s back into the mix…the clicking STOPPED! weird.
hey grateful…are you using single ended interconnects?
T
Aw man, that’s awesome you figured it out. Odd, but at least it went away!
However, I’m already using balanced XLR for everything. DS > BHK Pre > BHK250. I’ll mess around with the cable situation.
