If you are using isolation and filtering products do you still need to cut the +5VUSB?
Or does it automatically cut it and let the linear PSU take over? I cannot cut ground or DS fails to handshake.
I hope MR. Smith answers. Anyone can answer. Please nothing OT Though.
Remember the VBUS only (optionally) delivers 5V, but it’s also used to signal when devices come or go and if they are a hub. It will depend on your other USB devices, your USB host and the PC (MAC, …)'s OS and OS version as to whether you can disconnect the VBUS at all or whether you can disconnect it after the system sees the DS. We’ve also had people who could disconnect the VBUS for a while but a minute change stopped that from working.
If your isolation product has an external power supply, keeping that power clean may clean up the VBUS reaching the DS.
Thank you MR. Smith! I can always count on you! In the middle of the night yet.
I have successfully cut it before with the DS Senior. I switched to new cables and isolators. I asked you because cutting it is like micro surgery. Very difficult and one false move ruined equipment. It has worked in the past. However I was never able to cut the ground. If I cut the ground the streamer will not see the DS. This is not only the DS either. It is every high end DAC I have. Plus the Ground is what really contaminates the signal AFAIK. I would have to think the isolators lift the Streamers USB power. Since for one thing it would then be additive to +10V. I am hoping/guessing they use the linear power in lieu of the streamers power. I mean I am hoping these things do not let the ground and power rail contaminate the signal. Since that is their big selling point. Plus to begin with streamer is not filthy PC. You know what though, it sounds fine to me.
The DS Senior is in my “little” system. Which is by no means little cost. It sounds great. The Select DAC II is in my reference system. I sincerely hope you outdo it with the TSS. For 30 Grand or so. That will be some feat indeed. It is possible since you and PSA cut all the fat. I will try it for 30 days when I can get it. If it beats the MSB I keep it and kick myself for spending Six figures on a DAC then. Although until TSS nothing could beat it.
Mr. Smith a question regarding the +5VUSB. I know that the DS Senior can still receive data if the +5VUSB is disconnected after the handshake do you know if the Matrix X-SPDIF 2 or Gustard U16 USB input can do likewise. I have a Singxer SU-1 which doesn’t. Thanks in advance for your response.[quote=“tedsmith, post:2, topic:9896, full:true”]

If a device doesn’t need the VBUS power it’s more the USB host (and the host’s drivers, etc.) that controls whether the VBUS signaling is needed than the USB device. The best you can do is see if it’s working for you in a given situation: it may stop working with any changes (e.g. another item plugged into a USB hub, an OS update, etc. I use my Matrix with USB power and I don’t have any USB cables that let you disconnect the VBUS line so I can’t easily do an experiment to tell you. Perhaps a post on the Matrix thread has the answer.
Interesting. I have an SU-6 that works without the 5V. They must have changed this. I have an USPCB A-B Adapter (it’s really just a board with shrink wrap on it). It allows you to turn off the 5V on it.
IFI make a device that allows you to plug a good quality 5V input into it so that you can cut off the 5V feed from your source. https://ifi-audio.com/products/idefender3-0/
Cheap too. I have one and it adds a little bit of detail into the mix, in my setup.
