Directstream DAC versus DCS Rossini

You could have asked that question quite a lot of times in this thread.

Apologies for interrupting your all exclusive dCS Rossini discussion.

Apart from dealers, or reviewers who get that stuff sent to their home or studio for loan there will be not many who have been in the position to do A/B comparison between these DACs.

If you do own a DSDAC and have the money for a Rossini, which is X x the cost of the DSDAC I am sure your dealer will allow you to do A/B listening in his listening room and you can bring your DAC to compare, if you don’t have Rossini money this subject is academic.

If you try to make a statement that the DSDAC beats the Rossini:
Somebody who earns Rossini salary buys a Rossini, it’s not about SQ anymore because of the diminishing returns in that price category.

It is about buying a well designed, piece of equipment that simply looks more reliable. The Rossini is made of solid aluminum beautiful machined pieces.
Compared to a already expensive EUR 7000 DSDAC that is bolted together from cast aluminum corners, aluminum profiles, powder coated and fitted with a MDF top.

It is like comparing a Lincoln to a Rolls Royce.

In terms of ride, handling, or cost? :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Perhaps all three of them.

I did get a chance to drive a Lincoln and for driving USA distances on US Interstates it is a mighty comfortable vehicle.

Likewise I trust the DSDAC is a mighty good DAC, but like a Lincoln is no comparison to a Rolls Royce the DSDAC is no comparison to the dCS Rossini.

It might be true you cannot hear a difference if you don’t spend also 3 x the money on your amps and speakers and cables. And even then I am not sure you can hear a mighty difference.

But, the look and feel of the dCS is a couple of classes above. And people who earn dCS Rossini money don’t mind spending that money just for those reasons.

I always look at this from market segment perspective. Some companies put their effort including R&D to deliver a product for a specific group whom they believe are willing and able to buy their product at a certain price. Marketing has the role of convincing those customers they are getting their money’s worth in terms of enjoyment, quality, after sale service, longevity and slow depreciation if possible. Of course customer experience comes into play.
