I paid a lot of cash for a good dac. Why would I want to do upsampling before feeding it to my dac? From my understanding, HQPLAYER is intended for use with low end dacs.

I agree with Paul, Roon doesnāt sound that great. I canāt bear to listen to it without HQPlayer handling the sound.
HQPlayer is used in many very high end systems. It just has an awful GUI. Roon makes it very easy to incorporate HQPlayer. I suggest giving it a try. Be forewarned, HQPlayer has a learning curve that has thwarted many! Once you figure it out, itās easy and it provides and endless combination of filters to experiment with.
Roon is expertly programmed. But sound engines are not in their wheel house. If Roon delivered on all fronts, quite possibly thereād be no Octave development.
