On road trips in our Subaru Outback, we don’t wanna deal with finding a station we want to listen to as the prior one fades. We listen to CDs. It is exhilarating to be flying past beautiful countryside, not a care in the world, a Beethoven symphony or a Mercury Living Presence almost anything not-quite blasting. Pure Joy for my wife and me. CDs are our solution.
I loved CD players (though hauling discs, not so much). but I don’t think there are any new cars in the US these days that are equipped with CD players. The last cars we had with factory units were my '07 Accord and my wife’s '11 Insight, both long gone now.
Hello Craig,
Our Subaru Outback that came with the CD player is a 2015 model.
My 2003 Subaru Forester has a CD player, but the system sucks!
Hello, I guess they got a lot better by 2015, the year of my Outback. Sounds very good, even though not high-end, to us.
Really sorry you cannot say the same!
My 2014 Audi had a cd player. But I’m a bit of a nut with order and having CDs rattling around in the car would have driven me nuts.
And my older Forester also has a tape deck
Tape deck? My uncle once had a car that had a swing out tissue dispenser.
The other day I looked at a 2025 Subaru Outback Touring XT that included a CD payer. Sure surprised me to see one in the center console. I tend to agree hauling CDs around is rather old school these days.
I should add my 2019 Audi SQ 5 has a CD player in the glove box. I actually use it on occasion, typically following a concert where I have purchased the bands CDs.
1956 Chrysler that offered an RCA 45 rpm record player (center console below the dash) as an option.
I still have my 8 Track player from 1973. I have three tapes. Led Zeppelin (IV), Robin Trower - Bridge Of Sighs, and the Beatles - Abbey Road.
Optimistic days they were.
Flaunting it!
I think the kids call it flexing now.
I’d forgotten about changers. One of our cars had one - maybe the ‘06 Accord. I remember a disc got stuck in it once and I never used it again. My first Honda, a ‘90’s era Civic, had a changer, too, but the player device was in the trunk, mounted to the underside of the rear parcel shelf (as they called it back then), and it used a removable 6-disc magazine rather than slot-load internal mechanism. Worked great, even if it was inconvenient.
I had a '99 VW Passat that a trunk mounted changer. It was a pain in heavy rain and deep winter. Talked the dealer into giving us a 2 extra magazines, so a changer over could be fast.
My 04 Accord has a 6 disk changer and SiriusXM. Trying to control from the steering wheel was always fun. Usually listen to SiriusXM - MLB Radio and some Symphony Hall during short trips around town. Sounds better than FM until the signal gets blocked by local obstructions/interference.
Is nobody listening to Roon in their car?
