Forced out of this hobby that I've enjoyed for 50 years

Curious, what specific models of the 802 did you like and why did you decide to upgrade?

i had the first gen diamond 802s or the 802D as it was called. very spacious soundstage, very clear vocals, yet a bit on the warm side. Downside was that the upper end could sound a bit harsh.

I decided to upgrade after having them for 21 years because I got diagnosed with blood cancer and felt this is my last chance to try something perceived as better

The PSaudio BHK preamp and 300 monoblocks really made the 802Ds open up and sound much better than the Classe amplifiers I had.

However, the PSaudio equipment does not match well with the Focal Scala Evo speakers at all

As you probably know, I am in the ā€œdo something, move onā€ camp with your situation. However, noticing that you have good but dated gear and are stuck with a respectable speaker, it might be in your best interest to try new gear. This time, choose returnable product, such as PMG Series. You might find each component gets you closer to your ideal, and you find the speaker more the improved messenger than the inherent weakness.

I am very sorry to learn of your diagnoses and I wish the best for you and your family. I’m not sure if this helps at all, but I spotted some B&W Matrix 802 S3 in the state I live in for $1200. It looks like they are not exactly what you had before, but if you are interested, I’ll go pick them up for you and ship them to you for cost. They are actually a couple hours away from me and I do not look forward to moving a shipping big speakers, but I would do it to help a friend. No pressure, I was just looking for a way to help. If you might be interested, reach out to me and we can figure out a time for me to go check them out with you over a video call so you can decide for yourself.

I just bought the BHK gear less than 2 years ago

Someone may have mentioned this, but I would snag a pair of Cardas Golden Cross interconnects and speaker cables.

I’m also sensitive to brightness, and those cables are amazing for toning down brightness, I always have them around just in case new gear produces unexpected brightness and they still sound great compared to modern cables.

That’s a great buy for a great classic speaker!

You are truly a Good Samaritan!

Found my dream speaker, the iconic Bose 901 Continentals. Even older than the B&W 802 S3.

The best part of the speakers are the tulip stands! They are so great to look at - great to listen to?.. not so much.

My Uncle was an Electrical Engineer and built his own 200w monoblocks to power them. They sounded great in the early 70’s. Which brings me back to my original point, that’s when this hobby was fun… not as accurate, but fun. Speakers didn’t cost thousands and weren’t so picky that if one wife in the entire chain isn’t perfect the entire system sounds horrible and you’re out thousands of dollars.

I’m not sure if this is what you meant but, if so, this thread might be better placed in the ā€œYour Next Upgrade?ā€ thread:grin:

That ship has sailed, I got conned out of my upgrade funds by two dealers that assured me that my electronics would be a good match for these Focals

My system sounds amazing so my one and only wife must be perfect then.

you see tulips. i see intake valves.

Me too.

Sounds like that’s one upgrade you have no need for - congrats Donald!

As a gearhead, I failed the Rorschach test! :frowning:

As do I.

Now that you said it, I can’t unsee it.
