Regarding powered subs and electrostatics etc., I was addressing your concern regarding a power cord or two necessary for the field coils. Yes power dissipation is a concern that may be addressed in the design. They can be a fun diversion in my experience, but are no means end game. Few things are for that matter.
I agree and disagree. You certainly canât make a buying decision based on listening to a YouTube video, but you can get a pretty good sense of the speakers overall qualities, in combination with the spectators reactions and feedback to the sound.
There are sonic differences between systems, although greatly diminished, via listening to YouTube videos, especially if using a good set of headphones on quality gear.
No, you canât even get that from them.
Maybe in the case of a careful binaural recording with a dummy head system like the ânew record day goesâ but these phone recordings have a bunch of dynamic limiting and donât preserve any of the spatial data and are lossy encoded in a way that masks all low level detail.
Just go to a dealer or show at the very least. This trying to use youtube to make any sort of subjective assessment doesnât work at all.
Of course youâre not going to get spacial cues from YouTube videos, or true dynamic capabilities, but there are enough cues to indicate whether or not a speaker has potential. And Iâm also not saying listening to YouTube videos is a substitute for listening in person.
It is however another useful input for determining what speakers are worth checking out.
I remember when Jay from Jayâs Audio lab made a recording for his YouTube channel and remarked on the FR5âs. I could tell based on what I was hearing in combination with his comments and enthusiasm for the speakers, that they were definitely worth checking out.
