Holo Audio: one of the best dacs ever? J Atkinson, H Reichert, S Deckert, M Lavorgna, GoldenSound, D Abramson and the Stereophile reviewers think so. Stereophile A+ and POY 2020

Informative evaluation, thank you.

Thank you indeed Frank, very interesting.

I am starting to think that the NOS R2R approach is the best one in my system.

The lack of ringing artifacts in the time domain, maybe: no pre or post ringing, perfect time domain behavior. I know there is a price to pay (aliased images, HF roll off). There is no perfect solution, but those issues seem to have less impact than ringing, in my system.

Or maybe it’s the 22 bit resolution, SINAD over 115 db and dynamic range over 130 db.

Who knows?

Wow you can compare a DAC within one day.

For those interested in oversampling (OS), as done in the delta sigma dacs and NOS, this is a very interesting and fairly short read, advocating NOS. Fairly compelling, don’t you think ?

… Well, the Mola Mola Tambaqui was well “played in” for demo purposes. So the comparison started on Saturday Evening. And I finished this Morning by playing some Bach Cantatas and Raga Nat Bhairav, interpreted by Nikhil Banerjee. Just the tonal colour was not in place in my point of view and within my system. As I mentioned: Great Advantage in Resolution and Air, but strenous in following the music, especially coming from PS Audio’s PST …

I need longer to get use to the sound of a new piece.
Currently I am owner of a modified Directstream with Edcor and a dedicated power supply for the analog part.

For a future Step Up I was thinking of Mola Mola.

does the DAC really get that hot during use?

You are right. Under operation the chassis is warming up. But its Sound Quality is very much depending on the the entire System …

Edcor XS4400. It is a pitty, but I can’t get the Transformers over here in Europe to modify the DSD Sr. :frowning:

For those of you who missed it, I encourage you, nay urge you, to read the article of JVS on the last page of the November Stereophile.
It’s about how to listen to music in a mindful way.
It’s essential reading for all music lovers, IMHO.

The only problem being is that they have none, and probably never again will. I too tried to buy from them months ago and never heard back from them. I believe only way is to buy direct now.

I ordered the Edcor in December and they were delivered in June.

Listening Deeply

Great piece. Thanks for sharing this.
While I may not always practice “deep listening” I do find that I have to “turn off the world” to truly enjoy my music. In my case it is my wife leaving the house so I can listen at levels appropriate for the system and the disc.

I was planning on buying either a May or Spring 3 DAC, but Kitsume company has scared me away.

The product has a lot of attention presently. Kitsume says on their website expect a 7-10 day wait for them to reply to customers.

I wanted to ask Kitsune if the May DAC has a digital volume control and how it works if available.

Given Holo as a Chinese company, a more sturdy representative in the USA would build confidence. The slow response time, and rather poor website had me asking about support should the couple running Kitsune goes under what would I do? They are one family calamity of never getting back to customers.

No volume control on the May, but I believe the Spring has one. Maybe someone can confirm.
Hope this helps.
I bought mine in Europe and the service from Magna HiFi was excellent.
Some people on this thread have reported excellent service from the US distributor, Kitsune Audio.

The Spring3 has a volume control that works only with the optional pre-amp module. I have also been a bit frustrated with the slow response time but I understand that Tim at Kitsune is somewhat overwhelmed with emails on a daily basis. I recently asked a question and he got back to me on day 10. However, once you get a dialogue going with him he seems to respond more quickly.

The other thing I can say is that I believe he is an honest guy. I have my laptop plugged directly into the Spring3 via USB, bypassing my Matrix. I didn’t tell him about my Matrix and asked if he thought using a USB interface, such as the Singxer (which he sells) would improve. His response was that in his opinion the USB module on both the Spring3 and May is so good that an interface would, “only deliver a slight diff sound, but not necessarily better. definitely not likely to measure better either.”

Wow, I just looked at the European site: 2 to 4 weeks waiting time. I got mine in less than a week 6 months ago. And the price is up by almost 10%. Even worse in the US: 5 to 6 weeks waiting time.
It seems like they cannot keep up with demand.
Holo owners know why :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

I’ve emailed Kitsune a list of questions on two occassions. Tim’s response was a few days delayed, but the time and details of his responses impressed me. One of the things I questioned about was using a KTE-SU2 DDC with the May KTE. In short, he replied, the May DAC was good in its self and wouldn’t much benefit from incorporating a DDC.
