HQPlayer and the Directstream. Settings?

No, only multiples of 44.1k

32 Bits per sample? Yes
32k sample rate? No
32 different bit rates? No

The DS Mk II accepts either DoP or Native DSD. Some sources seem to work better in one or the other, but it doesn’t matter to the DS Mk II.

I don’t think I’d convert DSD to PCM even at 705.6k (that’s just my personal preference), but otherwise:
There is no perfect mathematically correct upsampling filter. How much upsampling you do at the source vs. in the DS is purely personal preference. Having a lower bit rate to the DS might be more reliable in some circumstances, but I wouldn’t sweat it unless you are having problems.

HQ Player has many more upsampling filter choices than the DS and it’s quite possible that various individuals may prefer one or the other better and even for the same filter in HQ Player as the DS (if it exists) it would still be personal preference.

Thanks Ted.

Sorry, I was not clear in my question. I was not talking about converting from DSD256 to PCM. I was curious about any benefits from upsampling say a redbook soruce to 705.6k PCM vs. upsampling it to DSD256 to feed the DS2 Mk2.

So you either prefer HQplayer’s upsampling filters, or you prefer Ted’s.

No pressure now

Edit - only kidding (literal mindedness is a “superpower”, I only recently realised not everyone is and most folks follow all these weird unspoken rules)

I thought that was what you were saying, but I tend to be literal minded and try to be complete. The rest of my response was addressing low rate PCM to high rate PCM and then to DSD or DSD to higher rate DSD.

I try not to play too too much with the HQPlayer filters, because I know I could burn up weeks of listening time as testing time listening to the same music over and over. But I have found some HQPlayer preferences that seem to play quite nicely with Ted’s. And he once encouraged me keep at it as much as I like… or at least he did not discourage me.

My ignorant gut reaction to the some of the questions above about support of 32-bit etc by the DS MK2 was, “Probably not, but it probably will play anyway. It just really still will be 24-bit not 32-bit, even though 32-bit is selected in HQPlayer.”

Just did some quick testing with a 24-48 album. Indeed, if I enter in HQPlayer to send 32-705.6, the DS MK2 shows 24-705.6, while playing fine. Plays fine also with “48k DSD” turned on. Not to say that means anything.

And when I turn DoP back on, it comes across as the DSD256 to which I limited HQPlayer for the DS MK2.

Side note regarding DSD512, if I turn “Direct SDM” off but have DoP on for the ALSA backend (Note: I am using a USB cable), then DSD512 plays across at the DSD256 to which I still have HQPlayer limited for the DS MK2. If I turn the ALSA DoP off, then it plays as 24-705.6. But if I have “Direct SDM” on, then there is no sound playing DSD512 until the playlist goes to the next lower-rate file. No surprise really.

I think I will stay with sending DSD256 not 24-705.6. That is, with ALSA DoP on.
