I came across your room remodeling earlier and it seems you made a nice place to listen to music. I wish I had same speakers :drooling_face:

Think about if you and Paul never met. There would be no DSD,or at least not what it is now ,huh!

Yes, nice if you can swap turntables in the multi dozen or multi 100k region and have the time and patience for it ;-).As Fremer occasionally says…there are even people who always exactly buy what he uses at the time. Just like the Chinese build replicas of the Neuschwanstein castle or similar in their county :wink:

No, in '88 or '89 I was working at a digital audio workstation company (with Gus Skinas) and Andreas Koch and another fellow from Studer came thru. I don’t know why, but as often happens in small start ups they brought me out to meet him. We ran into each other a few more times. Some friends of mine snagged me at an AES convention and hauled me up to a demo of multichannel SACDs (which I hadn’t yet heard of), Gus Skinas was there, Andreas was there, I also met Dr Andrew Demory and others from the SACD project. Listening to multichannel DSD was my epiphany, it changed my life. … Andreas and I talked on the phone a few times (some of which were while he worked with Ed Meitner), one of those times he mentioned the single most important thing to help me build a DSD DAC: “If you can low pass filter a bitstream and get the audio you want, then that’s DSD.” That really helped me design all of my PCM to DSD conversions.

It still looks close to the same as the last picture in that post. I have more SACDs and CD stacks around, a PS Audio P20 sitting in front of the preamp and my work table (in the photo’s above with the TSS on it) is in front of the chair at the sweet spot. It’s definitely much more cluttered… My “stock” table which used to look like:


is now no longer visible because my collection of rarely used hardware has taken over the hundred square foot area in front of the fireplace. There are boxes of spare parts from board builds, extra Sony DVP S9000ES’s that I thought I might need, my old prototypes and some DS, DS Jr, etc. prototypes. My wife would rather I don’t show current pictures :slight_smile:

Can you share what you actually used those Sony 9000´s for? I know there were mods for them to sound much better than stock,but it would have required me to ship my unit to US and that would be quite expensive round trip and I skipped that idea.

To me it doesn´t sound too good ,at least not anymore. Sacd clearly better than cd but time has passed.

I had my first DVP S9000ES modified by Dan Wright (before he was ModWright :slight_smile: ) It’s still in use in my wife’s system upstairs.

The Sony DVP-S9000ES, SCD-1 and SCD-777ES all used the same DSD processing chip and you could find the naked DSD bits there. With the service manual I found the bits I was looking for and passively filtered them to verify that simply filtering DSD bits was all that was needed (see the first picture in this thread.) I knew that was the case intellectually, but I’m a big believer in checking assumptions. (Allen Wright (Vacuum State Electronics) modded those Sony players by filtering the DSD bits, but apparently he and I used different places to tap off slightly different bits.)

Early on I didn’t know what I was going to do with my DSD DAC so for a little time I gathered up some DVP-S9000ES’s off of the used market, but stopped because adding mods to a no longer sold device clearly wasn’t a good idea in the long run. But I had spares if I destroyed one or two.

Those are the people where it’s interesting to know for which occasions they listen to digital and which to vinyl. (tape is more obvious :wink: )

Recordings which are only available for one of them?
All analog recordings on the one, the rest on the other?
Just as to availability of own collection?
A favorite generally for media available on both?
Depending on mastering and recording

So if I understand it correctly ,after modding it you could send sacd layer digitally out to DSD dac ?

Very impressive.

Rare to see a single seat sweet spot in such a setup which is as I’d do it. In many big setups (as what I saw from music room 1) sweet spot is too far in distance from speakers (which are often quite close together as well) compared to what I’d prefer. But it for sure depends n speakers and room, not only on personal taste. Looks like fantastic sound.

I love listening at Mike’s.

I’ve always been fond of sitting at the third point on an equilateral triangle defined by the speakers. In my system all speakers are aimed right there. I confirmed with the designer of my speakers that they are indeed meant to be used pointing right at the sweet spot. I wish I had enough room to pull my whole system away from the front wall like Mike can. (But for multichannel my system is fine as it is.)

Yep I chose the DVP-S9000ES just because it was the cheapest SACD player available with access to the DSD bits (if you have a soldering iron.)

Besides the 9000ES in my wife’s system I only used the 9000ES in the first picture for one listening session - just to verify that the simple passive filter using the Jensen transformers sounded good.

I have a EMM Labs DAC6e, their CDSD transport and a Sonoma system. I had used the Sonoma and the CDSD to rip a bunch of my SACDs before I started the DAC project. In fact it was the dying of the CDSD that started me building a DAC (don’t ask why I decided to build a DSD DAC when I lost my only transport that gave me raw DSD.)

Anyway I have used my computer to send DSD to my DACs since the beginning (e.g. the big red DAC has a ST glass connection to talk to my Sonoma and/or CDSD.)
