Modding the DirectStream DAC MKI

Turbotk … Do you have any experience with these? I’m thinking of using them on my 2nd DAC.

I’m going to go over the top and try the Ag version (LL1948Ag) when I get the adapter boards. It’s going to hurt my bank account. I guess I should wait for the verdict on the Jensen’s before I get carried away!

I think they should work. I’ve used tantalum a lot in audio circuits in the past, having come from a Naim background (they use them a lot). So am comfy using them.

Last night I made some little sub boards to hold 2x 470u 10v tants in parallel per Vocm R (not my first choice but had these ~ expensive caps already on hand). Also holds a pair of tants for local OA PSU bypass. It all attaches there along the Vocm resistor string. I think that’s another mod concept you could help bring to life

Love it! What I noticed immediately was, where was this bass hiding first of all. Welcome to the band. Also the sound of horns got smoother (in the good way), very much reminds me of how well a Termintaor Plus handles those things for example. I almost fell into a trance listening to several songs in a row with eyes closed at ~ midnight. I love it when the speakers are ~ gone, can totally relax and just hear like that…

I will be ordering transformers later today. Is anyone interested in a complete assembled Plug and play transformer pair?

I will order your transformers (2), Assemble with our adapter boards and ship to anywhere in the US for $600. ETA the end of August.
PM if interested.

So, are these the best (transformers) we think we can get - that will fit the space? Better than the Edcor?

These are way better then the Edcor’s. The Jensen’s are also very good but are hard to find.

I would like to hear more opinions on the SQ difference between the Lundahl vs Jensen vs Edcor.

Plug and play means remove/desolder our EDCORS and solder in the 8 pins in your subassembly to our existing analog board.

So others are not confused with your power card which was physically plug in not solder.

Did you swap out XS4400’s for LL1948 orsstock Edcor DS output transformers?

It would be awesome if you could make a video of this process. I think I understand what you are illustrating, but if you can do a simple video, it would go a long way to clearing up any questions.

Sorry. The plug and play part meaning you don’t have to assemble the adapters and attach the transformers to the adapters. It will be like installing the 4400 transformers.

It’s simple and the provided instructions will be clear. The hardest part is cutting and soldering the header pins to the main adapter board and flush cutting the top so the top insulator sits flush. That’s why I am offering the pre-assembled transformers. My order goes in today at 5:00pm eastern.

Turbotk could also help with the 4400 to 1948 difference in SQ.
I have only compared the 4400 and stock units with the Jensen’s and it is big difference for the better.

Thanks Jeff!

Sent PM and added you to the list.
