BTW if you want an eye opening experience you can get a low cost audio output 1-axis mag field sniffer probe. Eg the “Budget Buzz Stick”. You can learn a lot using that; I sure did
A motto I try to simplify audio by: If I can hear it, it matters, even if I cant explain it. OTOH if I can’t hear it, I don’t care much about it, sonically at least

Back to the main reg U1 excess heat issue… I put the DAC2 board set (upper and lower) into DAC1 chassis. U1 runs cooler in DAC1 chassis for some reason, as far as I can tell under 60C. But the same DAC2 board set in DAC2 chassis, U1 runs over 70C (ouch). They have similar Vin in both. DAC2 U1 is not shorted to the heat sink. Hmm… so maybe the downstream 1000uF electrolytic cap U4 (or local ceramic C3) is bad somehow? Maybe just some internal problem with DAC2 U1? Hmm… T

I see 670mA on the 12v supply line to the DAC2 analog board.
DAC2 chassis U1 runs much hotter than DAC1 with the same DAC2 boards in it…
I have DAC2 cabled directly to the amp via Front Row single ended cables right now (no analog pre). Ahh, heaven T
Are they both drawing the same? If so I would say a bad CAP somewhere.
On another note. I installed another set of Jensen transformers in DAC#2 but wired the primaries in Parallel. Wow… What a gain increase. I wasn’t expecting the gain to be 6db higher. The DS now has the same output as most other DAC’s.
But does it sound better?

It should be pretty much exactly 6dB. Then it’s 3dB higher than most DACs.
Will the LL1948 transformers yield a 6db gain?
