Folks, please stop the personal attacks and be kind.
Personally I feel the value proposition for my upgraded DSD Mk1 dac was worth every penny. I shake my head in disbelief at how good the music flowing from my speakers sounds every time I sit down to listen.
As it should be!
I continue to be amazed by how good a well thought out system can sound.
I agree 100%. From the first time I hit play I fell in love with the spacious sound stage. Almost like the performance was right in front of you and can reach out and touch the performers or walk around each individual.
Thanks for stepping in.
STOP!

Thank you!

Sorry. Thatās not what was happening here. Anton knew exactly what he was doing. Seems he uses that excuse all the time here when someone calls him out and he has no other excuse. Anyone who reads his past several post will understand this.
Thanks! Very helpful.
I didnāt realize this DAC supports 2xDSD via the AES XLR input. None of my other high end DACs would support anything over 1xDSD.
Yup, 2xDSD, aka DSD128, can be done via AES. For the PSA DS MK1, the I2S is needed for 4xDSD, aka DSD256. And if I remember correctly for a DS MK1, the 2021 Sunlight firmware is needed for DSD256 too. The MK2 manages DSD256 out of the box with I2S or with USB. My old Bricasti M1 only managed DSD128. But it did sound really good. Even when only being fed PCM 16-44.
What I discovered today was if you upgrade to the newest Sunlight firmware the AES/EBU XLR input does NOT pass DSD2x. Only DSD1x. Did they degrade the XLR input to make the i2s do DSD256?
It doesnāt really matter to me as Snowmass sounds much better to me anyway.
First I have heard of it. Does not seem rightā¦
Is this correct?:
āWhat I discovered today was if you upgrade to the newest Sunlight firmware the AES/EBU XLR input does NOT pass DSD2x. Only DSD1x.ā
TIA
@tedsmith Does anyone here use Sunlight firmware and also get DSD2x via XLR?
Itās interesting that JK Richards loads all of his Signature plus upgraded DSD MkIās with Snowmass V1 because he feels it sounds better than Sunlight. I wonder if that applies to his APS MKI transformer and VOCM upgrades as well?
FW slightly changes sound signature from melodic to audiophile. Donāt rely on what somebody says. Try for yourself. There are not so many FW versions, and it takes only DAC restarted to flash it.
Some other forum members and I like Windom, Snowmass 3.0.4 or 3.0.5 with APS transformers
I forget what version of firmware my DSD MkI had when I initially purchased it, but I do know that every new version was a noticeable improvement in sound quality. I find it somewhat puzzling that the signature plus upgraded dac sounds better with an older version.
Thereās nothing puzzling in it.
Old doesnāt mean bad in this situation.
FW slightly changes sound signature

Mods change sound signature
The result is unpredictable, system dependent, and thus more or less satisfying your taste.
I felt (and somebody else reported) that from old to newer FW, the sound signature changed from melodic to audiophile, kind of more hi-rez. I wouldnāt say there always was an improvement with newer FW.
APS people like Snowmass
I know a person with a lot of pure silver in the signal path - he likes Windom
I like Snowmass 3.0.5 better with my pure copper wiring
