Modding the DirectStream DAC MKI

@Anton_ss Do you think most of the gains perceived in the full Signature Series Plus unit over the modded unit is due primarily to the power supply upgrade in the Plus?

Stephen,

Yes, I think so.
I know what APS transformers could bring, though I donā€™t know the difference with R2 APS. But I know what an additional PSU for the analog board brings.

Thatā€™s not true, and was unnecessary.

Allears is simply sharing his enthusiasm and defending the constant attacks.

Anton, please refrain from taking cheap shots. This matter can be discussed politely.

Anton. Why do you revert to name calling and false accusations when you are proven to be wrong?

Info taken directly from manufacturers website.

Anton, I am honestly interested in learning what XLR connectors you swapped into your DAC which you state improves the sound. Please let us know.

Where did you prove me wrong?
So far, I have proved you wrong many times.

And on most points , we kind of agree.

Iā€™m not name calling only keeping things real.
This is what youā€™re doing: praising APS.

Too much of enthusiasm in an argument on a technical forum without understanding how these mods work, without any experience. Thus, the conflict.
Itā€™s not me whoā€™s attacking, Iā€™m constantly defending what I know on practice and all I have as a counterargument: APS said it. Itā€™s counterproductive. Thus, we weā€™re going circles on the same points without any input.

Having knowledge about how our gear works is not a prerequisite for enthusiasm. Also no such thing as too much enthusiasm.

You certainly are. You did it before also.
You always say. ā€œIā€™m not ā€¦. When itā€™s very clear to everyone you are. Itā€™s not a good look for you.

Yes. Whatā€™s wrong with that? Without them this DAC wouldnā€™t be what it is today. I feel they deserve a big thank you instead of bad mouthing them. Are you jealous or something?

Because Iā€™m not a fan of Silver and Rhodium in the signal path, I was looking only for a gold plated ones.

I was surprised to find out that Furutech doesnā€™t produce any gold-plated connectors anymore. I read it has something to do with ecology, because gold plating is dirtier process than silver or rhodium plating.

I followed the lead from my more experienced friend, who recommended these particular connectors. He said they perform the same as top Furutech. I didnā€™t tried them against Furutech, because I didnā€™t find any for sale. But they 100% better than the stock ones.

I used Viborg before, these more recognized. I didnā€™t find any difference but slick design of Viborg parts. Black matches black panel better, anyway.

Thanks

You do realize the factory ones are gold plated copper donā€™t you. Seems better than what you replaced them with plus you will need to jump wire the connections on the one you picked. This seems like a sideways modification to me.

The stock Neutrik connectors are brass. Barely yellow in section.

Viborg or EIZZ are phosphor copper. If you scratch itā€™s pink.

Teflon also has a positive impact on the signal.

A short run of a good copper wire is a necessity, of course. The result sounds very good.

Neutrik makes nice panel mounted XLR connectors with silver plated contacts.

You guys would be hilarious in a bar. :grinning:

Yeah, the ones they manufacture in Lichtenstein are the best of what Neutrik has.
I was looking for something better and only gold-plated.

I prefer silver as it is the most conductive element.

True, but itā€™s prong to oxidation, like bare copper. Nobody uses pure copper and pure silver. Anyway, gold is used in medicine and in scientific equipment because it is resistant to oxidation and hard.

If you take conductivity into consideration, then Rhodium should not be anywhere near Audio! And Iā€™m pretty much agree, at least, not in a signal path. Thus, gold plating is my choice.

From one of the most innovative manufacturers among the recognized ones:

Keith (K.L.E.I.) is responsible for bringing IACS (International Annealed Copper Standard) into the audio conversation. Using pure copper (100% IACS) as a reference, the IACS percentage defines a metalā€™s electrical conductivity relative to pure copper. For example, brass (25%~37% IACS), bronze (15 ~ 48% IACS), and rhodium (35%~38% IACS) are poor to average electrical conductors when compared to pure copperā€™s IACS. Pure silver is even better at 105% IACS. Gold is about 70% IACS.

PURE Harmony. KLEI claims this version achieves an IACS of 106% for BOTH the signal pin, as well as the ground/return pins.

This was for the RCA connectors. For some reason, they didnā€™t come up with XLR connectors. Otherwise, I would use them. I love Harmony binding posts. They make a big difference.

Not sure I would characterize Gold as a hard metalā€¦.

Apropos of nothing?

Regards.

Nor does anyone use pure gold.
