New PS Audio speakers?

I was looking at Wilson’s website, looking at the new models. They sell a set of moving discs, for a mere $800. They look well made, but for something you are going to use maybe once, or twice, but certainly not often, I would think they could have made up something a lot cheaper.

The first time I saw retractable casters was on the Sonus Faber, top of line. I think they are the Aida, list price $120k. They would be on my list if I win the lottery or marry a rich woman. In my case the odds are about the same.

My Focus weigh in at 175lbs each. I can move them by walking them on their cones, but it’s not easy. They came with these hard plastic rails, about an inch wide, by an inch tall, and about ten inches long. They were held on by two long wood screws. The brass cones screwed into the rails. About two years ago I got a deal on 8 of the big Star Sound cones. I removed the rails, and drilled four holes in the bottom of each speaker. I then put in threaded inserts, and then the cones. With nice long threaded shafts I was able to tip the speakers forward so that the tweeters point at my seated height. Otherwise they were above my seated height. It was a nice upgrade, better sound too, as I found that a couple of the wood screws has gotten lose. It gave the speakers a more solid connection to the floor.

I am referring to furniture sliders, such as these $8 wonders from Walmart, click.

I don’t think those would hold up too well under my spikes.4_gifThe spikes can be removed, of course, and the casters reinstalled, but it’s nontrivial.

Probably not.

Attached spikes are difficult to deal with unless the speaker weighs perhaps 20 lbs and one can easily pick them up.

On the other hand, it would not take much to raise each corner of the speaker and place a piece of cookie sheet resting on a furniture glider under the spike.

What has Paul been telling the industry - this was just posted on StereoNet Australia. I know discussion of a speaker design has been ongoing but I do not recall pic’s on here? Anyway, the loudspeaker project must be gaining traction.

Looking at the design of the AN2 again, it occurs to me that the side panels could be replaceable. The standard white or silver metal panels could be replaced with black, gray, red, or any number of colors. With the help of a painting service you could even offer unlimited custom colors as a special order. Other options could be various real wood side panels such as walnut, cherry, oak, etc.

If the panels are easily user-installed, a customer might order different finishes multiple times over the life of the speakers, allowing for remodeling, moving, and room changes. Imagine an ad photo with a rainbow selection of optional colors. Actual panel inventory could be limited to standard black, white, and primed panels ready to paint.

Arnie has left us in the dark
He should spend some time on us who have Infinity Speaker. I have had Infinity since 1978 and my Rs 1b Since 1982.
We are missing an update of crossover and a new electronic crossover that is balanced etc.
The disappointment is that he does not publish updates to the old Infinity before he dies.

There is only my attitude as a lifelong Infinity customer.
I apologize for my bad English “google lol”with best regards

Michael

Wow … A PS audio speaker? Is PS becoming a lifestyle company ? Lol

i can only imagine if it comes to fruition it will represent a tremendous value.

Nice speakers. I had a pair of 1B’s too. I think you misjudge him. He was the designer in the sense of voicing, it’s true, but it takes a company of people to design an entire system like the IRS 1B, its crossover, etc. The original crossover work was done by one team, the speaker, another, the voicing by Arnie and the ideas by him as well.

That team is long gone and it would be next to impossible to design new updates for this product from only one person. Consider it a classic as it is.

I don’t know about lifestyles - I wouldn’t trust us to handle your decorating, that’s for sure.

But yes, a PS Audio speaker - perhaps several, designed by Arnie Nudell. One of my long-term dreams is to make everything in the chain from the wall ACX socket to your ears. That way, a complete PS Audio system could represent our best thoughts on how music can be presented in its entirety in your home. And yes, it will have tremendous value.

PAUL I can never figure out how to post pictures from my iPhone here. If you can post my with my woofer in the middle to show non dsp fixing lol it would be nice.

But if I may I have a few questions.

For you to use dsp do you have to have all of the sounds get processed through dsp ?

As in my case I had to center one woofer tower right in the middle between the mid towers so my bass is now flat. Why would you not use an analog method to adjust the bass alone so no dsp needed ?

Have you heard the g1.2 setup I had planned on them before I got sick. ??

Lastly how many cross over points as mid range for me needs to be from 100 or so up to atleast 4500 or more if possible to not effect vocals. Is it still three way or four way now ?

I do feel as you and have heard many ultra high end setups and don’t feel they best them either but I wonder if it’s more about loving and being used to what we have more than if it’s better or not ?

Lastly it’s some 35 years and arnie made them

how far ahead of everyone was he and amazing feat alone. I love what he did with our new crossovers.

Hi Al. I can post if you email them to me. It’s not hard, just get the photos off the iPhone and onto your desktop. Then when you are writing the post click on the blue box below where you are writing the post labeled Attachments. Then you put your pictures in there.

You could just DSP only the bass, that is possible. I think Bob Stadtherr is building you an analog phase box to fix the problem.

I thought the dsp for bass alone too I own a Deqx HDP4. The issue is delay of the processing. Hence I reached out to bob to add In a analog phase shift for each tower in the cross over after the mid tweeter cross point. The speaker movement was suggested. It seems mono woofer towers add in the middle of the room so I had to move them to the left to be outside the 20 DB bump. Moving front to back only helped about 5 DB. It may seem crazy but wow how good they sound now and imaging has been rock solid now too

I found a way to upload finally.

Thanks

I am in zero hurry to replace my Legacy Aeris speakers. They thrill me every time I listen. I have listened to many other, significantly more expensive systems, but none have extracted my card from my wallet. The AN1 is or will be the exception, I believe. Looking forward to that opportunity.

No question about it - a super tough market. I am not entering this high priced market for any reason other than a selfish one. I want these speakers for myself. Plus, we’ll get a dozen or so out there to be people like yourself, Mike Kirkham, a few of our distributors, reviewers and the like. If that’s all we wind up selling I am ok - and the reason is simple. Where we see the market is the lower cost derivative models based on the same technology. These will be easier to get into showrooms and homes.

Besides. Take a look around at what $50K buys you. A pair of Wilson Alexias, for example, or Magicos, heck, for a few bucks less, the new paradigms. All wonderful speakers, don’t get me wrong, but in completely different leagues. Where these speakers might have a couple of woofers, midrange and a tweeter, none will even come close to approaching what this beast can do. Not even remotely close. Think about it. The line source itself has 30 linear drivers. The servo system alone is probably worth the price of entry.

Like all PS products, it’s way more bang for the buck - and, truth is, I am not even sure we can get it out the door in these small quantities for $50K. That’s just a WAG.

Paul:

I don’t know how much you have committed to a basic design, driver compliment, etc., but I thought this product might be of some interest as a point of reference:

Danish Audio Design International

“The Grail” appears to share some of the design cues of your previously posted render and speakers in the Infinity IRS, four-box line.

Cheers.

Paul,

I am so sad to hear your buddy, Arnie just passed away. Hopefully PS Audio will still be able to release the new speakers under his name to honor his contributions to the industry.

I just read the news about Arnie. RIP.

I do hope these speakers are still going to be sold. I would love to hear a pair myself if I ever get the chance.

The new speaker initiative will carry on: http://www.psaudio.com/pauls-posts/arnie-nudell/

He left us with his reference system he had labored over for 15 years. The best stereo system I have ever heard including the IRSV. He also left us with designs, plans, and directions for what he wanted. We shall carry his legacy forward.
