My sincere condolence to this loss of a best friend!
I think there was good reason aside of his reference system why you let him do the major voicings. Also left over temporary concepts and ideas usually don’t subsitute the constant role and importance a genious as Arnie must have had for PSA developments. I guess a bunch of current ideas of someone as Ted would be of comparable limited gain.
Would be interesting to know what role he played and direction of influence he had that no one else within the team could contribute in that way (also except for speaker development, where for sure it was more than essential)
I just saw Paul’s video showing off Arnie’s speaker. What a treat to see what he was working on. It’s also nice to hear how enthusiastic his family is that Paul carry on with his vision. As a teenager I always wanted a pair of infinity’s (the 1.5) but at the time $1500 was way of of reach for me.
Looking forward to the day when I can own one of Arnie’s and Paul’s designs.
It’s going to be tough competition for my TAD’S but I’m eager to find something better that isn’t outrageous in price or size.
Off topic I found an cool infinity promotional video with statements from Arnie.
Replying to an old post here but I’m just going through this thread for the first time.
I’m sure Ted would be happy to help with an awesome digital crossover !
I’m looking forward to hearing more about your speaker developments. I had some GoldenEar Triton Ones (I saw in one of your videos you’re good friends with Sandy) which had DSP’ed subs below 100Hz also. Sandy’s dipping his toes into fully active loudspeakers it appears, so that will be interesting to watch.
But a line source of AMT’s like you are doing will be something magical. I can’t wait to hear these when they hit the shops!
At the same time, an Arnie influenced, Paul/Ted/BHK collaboration fully active loudspeaker may be a special thing too - one day perhaps.
Hi everyone, it’s my first post here on the forums.
I really hope PS Audio can keep the costs down for the entry level model, possibly make it PS Audio’s version of the best bang for the buck Andrew Jones’ Debut B6 ? But surely not at the same price level as the Elac, just figuratively. This way, PS Audio can opens the doors to a wider audience to just a taste of the great sound it can offer in the bigger brothers.
Also, keeping the look “nice” - high wife acceptance factor, is also very important.
I’m looking forward to being a little child - almost like when I bought my QRS 1 in 1978 lol - I will of course be beta testers - if you’re missing lol
This is an exciting prospect… I’m moving into a large space that will take a lot of speaker, and looking forward to what the mid-price-but-not-entry-level offerings might be. I might be alone here but I find it a little distressing to look at paying 25k for a passive 2-way, 2-driver speaker which requires massive amplification to work properly.
@Paul , is the thinking to actively amplify and DSP sub-bass for the whole line? And aim for mid-90s efficiency for the rest of the speaker? This is a tremendous impact on the value proposition in my book, enabling smaller, simpler amps without dynamic constraint.
+1 for the all-active, DSP-crossover version with @tedsmith pitching in. Just think of how simple it would be to implement 3 upgradeable FPGAs and class-D amps per channel. If you want to talk active speakers call me.
Thanks, Chris. Our intent on all three of the first models is servo controlled self amplified bass with DSP. Also, there will be a midbass coupler that will also be amplified with the ability to adjust its level to match the system, tastes and room to whatever sounds right. The whole speaker should then be efficient and we’re shooting for at least 95dB and be able to hit uncompressed, undistorted peaks of 120dB with just about any amplifier imaginable. Lofty goals, but that’s where we’re starting.
Here’s a world premiere for you. A look at the first prototype of our new midrange driver, an AMT style folded ribbon, the largest I have ever heard of being built. This beauty should be able to quickly move a huge amount of air and have the equivalent surface area of a 15" driver with the speed of a ribbon.
Bear in mind, this is only a prototype and there are
Thats a massive ribbon. I can’t wait to hear the final product. I had Apogee Calipers and Stages and I was addicted to their sound. I love sound of ribbon drivers. This will be a welcome update.
NICE Paul…
We have been playing with the DSP operating system all day long
In about 45 days, our two new speaker models are ready to meet their first listeners. You must be more welcome. Get up on the fly and come to visit, be wild. I will send you enough photos as soon as possible.
This is really great @Paul !!! In my quest to find the best speakers, I‘v come across many active pro monitors that have AMT ribbons as tweeters. I have always been dissppointed that they have such small radiation surfaces and that AMTs are not used for the midrange but always cones instead. Will your driver play down to 300hz or below? I think that around there is the magic crossover frequency…
