Pandemic equipment break?

I’ve been listening far more with Covid. We’re on our third lock down a they’re talking about a fourth here in Ontario, Canada.

I’ve been spending like a sailor on shore leave.

I hear you about waiting for a deal. I really want to ge the new transport, but the deal isn’t good enough for me to afford. Maybe someday.

That-a boy!

Enjoy.

That’s one of my potential purchases and the DSD II I’ve set aside money but I’m in no hurry as my set up sounds great right now.

Well, the pandemic is what got me back into the audio world. When fall ended and it started to be nasty outside (we had an early winter in Idaho) I started spending more time in doors and listening to music, rather than outside with camera and binoculars. One thing (new speaker cables) led to some small tweaks, and then I discovered Paul’s “Ask Paul” series. That led to tweaks, more tweaks and yet more tweaks. When the IRS (tax people, not the speakers) were generous with my refund, I was able to have my wife agree to a system upgrade—out with NAD, in with PS Audio—Stellar GCDAC, M-700 pair, and in a few more weeks, some Maggie LRS speakers.
Yeah, Covid has its “benefits”.

No break for me! SGCD, M700s, SP3, Iconclast speaker cables, various other cables, and just yesterday my Black Ice DAC showed up. Plus lots of new CDs. Next I’m going to dip my toes into vinyl…

Edit: Wow! How could I have forgotten my Jay’s Audio transport?!?!

Hope you let us know what you think of the Black Ice DAC…

I have one under the Jolida badging and think it is excellent given it’s relatively modest price.

Will do, sir!

Interesting article by Adam Grant in the NYT about how we’re feeling during this pandemic, calling it “Languishing.” I think it’s maybe why some of us have gone on an equipment-acquisition spree.

I guess it makes me feel like i’m accomplishing something.

I find fascinating how differently people have reacted to the pandemic, ranging from near shut-down to easy acceptance.

Humans are complex intriguing beasts.

well, it’s gonna affect people differently based on your situation…

Single-parent restaurant worker whose place of employment closes, with few other social outlets, struggling financially, crappy internet so kid is struggling with school, and hasn’t been able to travel or see friends or family in a year.

Family where parents and kids have ability to work from home, great infrastructure, a cabin in the woods, and a small pod of friends who can remain contained and engaged.

But yep, I get where people have similar situations, it can affect them differently.

I do worry, though. Less for me, I guess, than for my kids – and how this is making an already wide economic/social/political disparity even greater. I think it’s that background worry that’ll affect people down the road. PTSD for the next crisis.

I really admired the Italian response to the lockdowns, singing on their balconies to each other.

Nothing beats live music. Even a BHK monoblock system can’t rival that.

Weird timing on your post. I finished The Humans by Matt Haig today. There are many interesting observations about humans from an alien perspective in the book. I have done only one upgrade during the pandemic. I added the rooDial extension to use a Microsoft Surface Dial as a control for Roon. It works quite well. I listen to music 8+ hours every day. I have also completed 19 books in 2021 so far so I am reading a lot more.

Nice. I just downloaded “The Humans” on Audible. Looks interesting.
