Paul makes a big decision on the amp

@johno@datacom.co.nz That’s really interesting. Starts the wheels churning.

Regnad, NOK is Norwegian Krone, worth about US $0.17 currently. I don't think any of the Scandinavian countries adopted the euro.

Thanks, stevem2.
The scandinavian countries being members of the EU use Euros.

Euros are accepted in the Scandinavian countries but they all kept their own currencies as well, unlike, for example, France, Germany, Italy, etc. You can spend Euros in the UK too but the local currency is the British Pound. The Scandinavian countries and the UK are not part of the eurozone. That’s what I was referring to (as I’m sure Frode understands as he lives in Norway, as I recall).

Edit: Frode, I thought Norway was not a EU member? [Apologies for going off topic]

Norway is in not fully in EU, is not in EUROzone but they work with EU using European Economic Area (EEA) agreement. Partly in, partly not. Possibly quite smart

Merrill is a small company and is very aggressive on doing trade in so the the $12K list price can be softened

That's because putting some stock NCORE modules in a box and selling direct gives them a lot
of wiggle room.

Let's see if they're still in business for more than a couple of years.

Dan your comment is uninformed, this is not just two NCORE modules in a box.

Please tell us what modifications/changes they make to the stock modules and please post a picture of the inside of the amp.

Paul McGowan said: But the output stage is still up in the air and I've decided to take a different course altogether (than class D).

I admit to breathing a sigh of relief upon reading this.

As I previously noted early on when discussing the new amp, I have yet to hear a Class D amp I like. While I was tickled to see if Paul and Clan could produce an excellent Class D amp, I harbored serious reservations.

Paul, I am sorry you have run into yet another major course correction. This must be disheartening. But I am again impressed with your integrity and drive to produce the best you possibly can, and not stop with "good enough."
:-bd

@dan: The NC400 is a complete unit while the NC1200 is a power stage only leaving the design of the input stage to the individual company producing the final product. The prices of the NC1200 based amps do strike me as high.

@Elk: Actually he seemed very excited at this course change.

What else could he say LOL. As he must have lost 50k already above his cost of researching and devepolment . When I do design and build cogens or service upgrades I get paid as I go. Yes there is a ceiling for design. Paul has no such recourse , it’s design ,test , design the build and sell .

And then prey to whatever his belief is that someone want s the damn thing before someone makes it old.

You know, I think you are correct. As with a science experiment, one learns as much from "failures" as successes.
