I have about $15000 AUD to spend and am about to audition both these units as I believe my preamp is the weakest link in my system & they are about the same price.

What are your thoughts on these?

Those two preamps are both great choices. Can’t go wrong either way.
I have not heard them back-to-back. But I expect the PMG to have greater transparency with the XP-12 to present with more warmth (not that the PMG is cold, rather it is neutral).
Why do you feel your current pre is inadequate? What is it?

The reviewer says he still holds the XP-22 “near and dear to his heart”. What is one to conclude from that? Nothing, I think.
He stated that the PMG was more dynamic. The important point here is the PMG Pre is more competitive to the XP-22 not Xp-12 the less costly option.
