Ok, guys, just to show we listen here’s a major update from PS engineering.

Because so many of you commented on the fact that we only allowed 5 watts Class A bias on the S400 and the smaller amp, the S200 had double that, at 10 watts Class A, we rolled up our sleeves and fixed that.

S400 and S200 both now have 10 watts pure Class A, which as we all know, is where the bulk of the music we listen to lives. Those first 10 watts (actually, as our friend and mentor Nelson Pass is fond of saying, "it’s the first Watt that really matters) are essential and even though we originally went with 5 Watts, which to our ears was extraordinary, we get it that it simply did not make sense.

So, our chief engineer, Bob Stadtherr’s been figuring out how to make it all work and line up and today we’re launching the first major upgrade to the S400.

Of course, it runs hotter. It’s still not as hot as a BHK 600 and it’s about the same as a BHK 300 in heat, but for those who currently have S400s, expect it to be warmer.

So, now, two stereo amps in the PMG Signature line: S200 and S400. Both run at 10 Watts Class A. The difference is the 400 has twice the output power as the smaller 200. Same circuitry, same performance, just double the output power on one.

Simple, clean and easy. Whew!

You’re making it hard for me not to get emotional :cry:. I just got some NOS Amperex Holland/Bugle Boy tubes for my M1200 and installed them. They’ve only been used for about 30 hours. I figured I should wait for an official review of the S400, but now…. :thinking:

Hah! Sorry Jeff and, of course, the M1200 is a GREAT amp….at least until you get a chance to hear a pair of M400s or even the S400…. :blush:

I have M1200s and have enjoyed tube rolling. What can you tell me about your choice to try the Amperex? I have not heard anything about them.

The Amperex Holland / Bugle Boy 12AU7 tubes were recommended to me based on my current system and setup. “…the best balance for FR10 planar detail, small-room nearfield listening, and smooth jazz tonal density without deliberately darkening the system.”

Thank you for the details! I also run the FR10s in a smallish room. I’ll look into those Amperex tubes, and thanks for the link.

Every time i read this forum it costs me money. I was on the fence about the M400’s but the stereo 400’s are a no brainer. Unfortunately my biwire Iconoclast cables are not long enough for a stereo amps as I ordered them in a short length for mono blocks.

I have owned two Gryphon Class A amplifiers. They come with a feature that allows me three bias adjustments. These adjustments allow me to set how many watts of Class A I can use. In low bias the limit is about 60 watts into 8 ohms before switching to AB. You would guess that would be enough for anything. In medium bias it jumps to 120 watts of pure class A. Overkill right? In high bias the amp is 100% Class A. 225 watts. No AB at all.

With the Gryphon amps, switching to high bias, all Class A is a stunning improvement. I always listen in high bias.

I am a believer that 10 watts of Class A should be extremely useful. I am curious as to why, with my Gryphon amps, high bias makes such a difference.

I’m fortunate to experience the different levels of bias in the Gryphon Apex and going from the “eco” mode? :rofl: to full blown class A is not a subtle difference.
