PMG Signature Pre has arrived and it sounds amazing

Amazing! Looking forward to more update, enjoy!

The MSB dealer (and their bias towards their product offerings be damned) would love to move me off the BHK600s. But these BHK600 amps are just too delicious to let go. Such an incredible value. And I expect to experience something similar with the PMG Pre. WRT using price to create a comparison of a highly acclaimed composer to a Jr High School band, I’ll let the component performance speak for itself without allowing the market position between these brands to influence my perspective. In my experience, time and again, the PS Audio products continue to punch significantly above their weight and market position on price.

PS Audio does offer components that punch way above their price! Totally agree to a point. I personally know someone who shares the love with BHK 600’s and I also agree great amps. I guess the test will if the PMG DAC can run the Cascade out of town? That’s what makes this hobby great and interesting. I’ve already stated too much! As Hans would say “Enjoy the Music”

This is the PMG Pre we are discussing here, not the PMG Dac. Will the PMG Pre contribute to and enhance the MSB Cascade performance, remain neutral and stand out of the way, or restrain the performance, will be the enjoyable evaluation. If the PMG Pre restrains any of the components, which would be unexpected given its specs and drawing experience from the Stellar Pre, I’ll consider reconfiguring into another system.

Since I own and intend to keep the BHK600s for many years, I aspired to introduce a complimentary component to these amps and the other analogue components in my system, the turntable and the tape deck. I admit a slight bit of hesitation about including the Cascade in the mix. Its performance direct into the amps is remarkable as it is. And the analogue sources thru the Cascade pre are solid. But with the Stellar and analogue sources, the music felt more engaging paired with the BHKs than when the analogue signal flowed thru the MSB Reference as a Pre. If the PMG Pre with the analogue sources draw me into the music more so than analogue sources flowing thru the Cascade pre, and the PMG Pre at minimum remains neutral to the Cascade signal, the PMG Pre will stay.

Playback Designs came out with a new DAC with alalog inputs which can take the place of a preamp. Given how well recieved the DAC is, along with its built’in preamp, the new DAC with analog inputs seems like it is worth checking out, and at a much lower price than the MSB.

Yes, I wanted to audition one or at least hear one at a dealer or AXPONA, Capital Audio Fest, both of which I attended this past year, hoping to catch an opportunity to hear the Playback Designs dac. I even called a US dealer about the new PBD DAC/Pre combo. But, he too, had not received a copy to evaluate. Looking forward to hearing reports on the new Playback Designs offering.

Not sure about the price on the new DAC/Pre. but the MPD 8 without the analog inputs sells for $26k.

I enjoy being below average in this case, lol

Hey, this stuff is all good. Mix and match as the budget allows and keep an eye to future offerings.
I think the 600’s will be hard to beat (particularly at good guy pricing) but the PMG could rock too.
A Playback Designs DAC with a good internal preamp could give the MU2 a run. I had a MSB DAC for a period and found the digital preamp
so-so. Thus, an MSB DAC with a good separate preamp is a great combo.
Whatever, the future’s so bright I’ve got to wear shades.

Good for you.

I like to think about age the same way I do about discussions on “good value” in Hi-Fi circles: Its all relative to perspective.
