Qobuz vs Tidal

I’m clueless regarding the label / streaming service workflow.

reasonable

would mean that only Tidal accepts the MQA lossy versions of music files

Well, I didn’t intend for the term lossy to be a part of my message.

Tidal creates no music files on its own. All the music files are provided to them from the labels. If they want to release MQA or PCM at whatever bitrates, Tidal is not the source. They add the files to their library and switch them out or away when asked to do so. Tidal is a conduit between recording source and available streaming.

Tidal is going HiRez as well. While we have both Tidal and Qobuz, in our system Tidal sounds better overall. And we don’t use MQA. However, Tidal will have both HiRez and MQA (I was told the MQA files they presently have won’t be going anywhere, unless there’s a licensing change) while Qobuz will only have HiRez. We’re dumping Qobuz when our year membership expires.

But HiRez files in Tidal or Qobuz don’t always sound better, esp on older music which we enjoy most. Different YES, but not necessarily better IMO. And we have to remember that upsampling includes some guess work (called interpolation) of what the original artist would have desired on a particular part of a track to sound like. So, while you may be hearing more info it may not be accurate … and if you aren’t use to hearing the additional info songs can sound off to you …

My comments concern the older music we listen to most and not the newer stuff which we rarely listen to. …

Is there a way to transfer music library from Tidal to Qobuz without spending for the year subscription fee for the app which is $36 for the year. I need to transfer my library once. Although both Tidal and Qobuz are nice I find Qobuz somewhat better sounding.

Via Reddit thread.

24 / 192 FLAC (non MQA) in August for most customers.

Finally the death of all that MQA stuff. They will still have it, and I will still ignore it.

folks said I was nuts for noticing the plastic MQA

well, I am nuts…but not because of plastic MQA

Can someone tell me why Amazon HD sucks? I’m listening to it and so far it sounds fine and seems to have everything and more. Seems like finding 192/24 is fine. I get the ‘I hate Amazon’ mentality - but other than that what doesnt it do? Dumb noobie question. Does anyone stream dsd?

This will be interesting to see. I too use Amazon HD and am happy with it. Get it for a good price with my Prime subscription, so, honestly, haven’t tried Qobuz or Tidal through my Strata.

I’m very interested to see if TIDAL eventually sun-sets MQA.

Also, I’m interested in the high resolution pricing across the industry. TIDAL charges $20 USD / month for the MQA / Atmos / High Resolution tier but Amazon, Apple, Qobuz charge much less.

Amazon and Apple believe there can be only one. Hence I don’t support either. I support Qobuz and Tidal. That’s it.

The Tidal family Hi-Fi deal from Best Buy online was hard to beat last year at $120 a year ($10 a month). Six logons. Never liked the idea of MQA. But Tidal does have ATMOS. Though if you have Apple hardware, they probably block it. Reminds me to submit requests to US, EU and UK competition authorities to go after Apple for anti-competitive behaviour. The Apple store won’t even show Tidal or Disney+ where I am. You have to go to Tidal to get a link to the app for Apple. Disney+ simply cannot be loaded on Macs in Germany. How is it over there?

@Carousel I also buy the annual TIDAL Hi-Fi subscription via BestBuy. Looks like we’ll be getting conventional high resolution for our $10/month in August.

Had both and kept Qobuz. To my ears and on my system Qobuz sounds better.

I used Amazon Music HD about two years ago, when I had the Bifrost 2 as my DAC. I couldn’t get ‘Exclusive Mode’ or the bit-rate switching (relay) to work right with AM and the Bifrost. I switched to Qobuz a little while after and not only did the DAC lock on to the bit rate correctly but I also found content above 16/44.1 to sound better.

There is/was a DSD streaming service, PrimeSeat, but I think its defunct. It was discussed on an episode of Ask Paul.

Musconv has been nothing but stellar for me. Anything that doesn’t transfer is called out and I can manually add the missing files to my destination. I also got 500 free transfers. Great service!

It looks like I may come full circle on Tidal HiFi and subscribe for the Tesla since it supports it.

That’s cool about TIDAL being an app in Tesla’s universe. Another forum member posted pics of his third party head unity (for car) that had a TIDAL app.

I do think Qobuz sounds better but TIDAL’s app reach and TIDAL Connect keep me with the service.

I’m sticking to Tidal! Tidal’s deep-dark interface is so cool and it is compatible with more devices than Qobuz. Indeed, I never subscribe to Tidal Premium but I can still access the download feature. That is because I’m using a Tidal Converter. It works well with all Tidal songs even though I’m a Tidal Free user.
