1984 A&M UK release, it’s fully DDD anyway

Where did you purchase the Al Di Meola, John McLaughlin & Paco DeLucia - Friday Night In San Francisco SACD? I didn’t know it was out yet and I only see it available for preorder at MD and Acoustic Sounds.

BTW, my vinyl copy is exceptional sounding.

Discogs can be a wonderful resource in racking down various specialty releases:

Friday Night in San Francisco - SACDs

Yea, “Friday Night” on SACD has been out forever; think I bought it used off eBay. It’s the new “Saturday Night” SACD/vinyl (white cover), recorded the same weekend in December 1980, that is being released this year sometime supposedly. I’m very excited for that one too, as it looks like a different setlist as well.

As far as the Friday Night SACD goes, there’s both the Japanese import SACD shown by weedeewop, and the one I have by Sony Music Entertainment. - at least I think they are different?

I like what I’ve heard from Intervention Records. Starfish and Don’t Say No are both in steady rotation. I’m trying to get into the “important” Matthew Sweet releases. Namely, Girlfriend, Altered Beast, and 100% Fun. That’s also my IR stack in its entirety.

I’ll have to give that Joe Jackson a try…thanks!

Intervention Records is having a 20% sale all weekend.

Anyone have a suggestion of where to get Esoteric SACDs at reasonable prices? I want to try some. Thanks.

Elusive Discs? I bet there’s a better way.

I know there are SACDs that play only on SACD players.

When the SACD was launched and the first discs were released, were any hybrid or did those first titles require an SACD player?

In my experience, which is hardly authoritative, the first discs were Sony releases (which included Columbia) and they were all single-layered, i.e. non-hybrid. I bought a few back then, but not many - Blood, Sweat and Tears, Billy Joel, Bangles, Byrds, Dylan, the famous DiMeola/McLaughlin/DeLucia “Friday Night” album, and a handful of classicals. It wasn’t too long before hybrids appeared. The only relatively recent single-layer I’ve bought is a Nicki Parrott, which I think is a Japanese import. I didn’t realize at the time it was SACD only.

Craig is correct AFAIK. SONY and Philips Electronics introduced SACDS in 1999 and then in May, 2002 Royal Phiips and Crest Digital opened the first hybrid production plant in the US.

What model number is your Sony SACD player?

Mine is a Sony BDP s5100. I found it on eBay and was the best option for me mainly because the seller was local and it was the right price ($AUS40).

I found a copy of the user’s manual on line which helped me set it up. It took some understanding and trial and error but I’ve now got the process down to a few simple steps. I discovered that the player preserves the loaded extraction firmware in its non-volitile memory so you can do some rips then turn it off and pack it away ready for next time.

I’ve been disappointed by two of the SHM SACDs for which I’ve shelled out cash. Both originally Deutsche Gramophone releases and they are much brighter and harder than the CDs released as part of the DG “Originals” series.

You can add this one to your SACDs to buy list! I just tested it and MOFI got this recording right IMO!

How does this latest SACD improve on previous CD or SACD releases in your experience? For example is it in the re-mastering, a step-up in the resolution, or a general improved conveyance of the recordings gestalt?

The redbook CD is no slouch. Curious, too, about how the MoFi improves on that.

The album sounds more dynamic and open on the SACD. There is more space between the instruments. I have the redbook cd and the remastered 44.1 flac and its much better than both of those IMO.

Good to know and thanks for sharing. I recently passed on an opportunity for the MoFi OneStep, thinking I have enough Clapton. I may pick-up a copy of the One Step Unplugged, should it still be available at a reasonable price.

Loving The Pretenders s/t on MFSL this morning. Also, there is an interesting comment from Rob LoVerde on discogs about the original tapes, history, origin, etc. I can only compare this to streaming, but am pleased.
