I have worked out what happened. If you click on the … icon to see who liked a post, then the , icon is transformed into a deletion dustbin. An inadvertent double click from shaky old hands is thus interpreted as an order to delete your laboriously constructed post. And I have now found the Undelete icon, so it was all a bit unnecessary
