Listening to verify the contrast in performance and sound quality to the Kuijken La Petite Bande performance. Both eminently enjoyable, both completely different in aesthetic vision. And, as much as I’ve enjoyed the Gardiner over the years, where the two diverge more decisively is in sound quality. As good as Archiv’s sound quality was back in the day, the Bert van der Wolf’s recording for Kuijken (23 years later) is just decisively more transparent, more natural. Glad to enjoy both depending on my mood.

I very much enjoy the Gardiner.

His book on Bach is superb as well.

Ah, the ever adventurous Ragazze Quartet! Here with music of Garth Knox - very modern, lots of pizzicato, lots of contrasting sounds and effects. Just great! More information and download here.

Time for a change in tone.

The work, commissioned by A Far Cry in 2017, is a collaboration with composer/multi-instrumentalist Sanlıkol , who sings and performs piano, oud, and ney; and percussionist George Lernis . The symphony, which blends Turkish traditional, western classical, and jazz music, follows a 17th-century Ottoman world traveler, Evliya Çelebi, reflecting the cosmopolitan identity of this Muslim adventurer and celebrating the rich history and cultural diversity within Islam.
