Camper Van Beethoven - Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart
I feel like a heel! This is one of my favorite old albums and I’ve long regretted that the recording quality is so bad on it. However the last time I listened I thought I should find my old record and A/B it with the digital version I’ve been listening to for many years now.
Its not even close. I dont know what the hell Virgin records did when they made a digital copy of this but it is AWFUL in comparison to the original pressing on vinyl. I wonder what other old favs I’ve deprived myself on for the sake of convenience.
Released today. An outstanding recording by Jared Sacks and excellent music and performances by Rembrandt Frerichs and his Trio. Review posted here:
Ack, so often true. So often the digital reissues are as if the transferring engineer never even listened to the result. Bleh.
The guy who did this must have been thinking, “I dont get paid enough to care about this”
I have and really enjoy the six cd complete set, but someone gave me this promo sampler. . . and wow. Wow. This is a great disc, a great summation of the set. “Things Ain’t What they Used to Be” right where it is is very effective.
The digital reissue process seems to be a high volume low quality activity most of the time, unlike some of the high quality vinyl reissues from folks like MoFi, Impex and Craft. And, the reissues are likely made from copies of copies from Iron Mountain (or similar storage facility) by whatever contractor is on site, with the original files never leaving the facility. (Same with a lot of vinyl reissues I suspect, with the well-celebrated exceptions.) So sad. Makes me long for a circumstance under which the vinyl re-mastering labels might release the digital copies they are making for cutting their new lacquers. (Come on MoFi) But, there is likely no margin in it, and certainly no license.
this is even worse, not part of a reissue - likely the first and last time they ever made a digital copy. Its not a super-popular album
