New on Qobuz. HR. It was pleasant to find a new release on Qobuz which I was almost certain to like. The inevitable Lachrimae and ‘Semper Dowland Semper Dolens’ bookended quite a few of the lighter pieces. The sound was excellent; you got a real sense of the lute being played before you, with fingering noises and the occasional chair scrape. I found the playing a little loose, and the pace was gentle, with “Mrs White’s Nothing” in particular verging on the sepulchral and suffering badly in consequence. It was a most enjoyable album. I have marked it as a favourite mainly because of the sound quality (and my love of Dowland), but for me the Nigel North interpretations remain the gold standard.
@chrisj1948, poor Mrs White! Huge calumny, malicious and unjustified …
Yes. Listen to North’s version on his ‘Fancyes’ album. Much livelier and more appropriate for the piece

“simulcast” on BBC2 and Radio 1 FM.
recorded on VHS, later transferred to DVD.
I’ve put together a playlist of a couple of dozen ripped CDs from the Hearts of Space label. They reside on a Western Digital 5TB external hard drive and then sent from my PC via JRiver wirelessly to my router then via Ethernet to the Bridge in my DS DAC. It sees a lot of playing time.
