Why DSD Sounds More Like Analog Audio: NativeDSD Founders

A new video was posted by Moon-Audio called Why DSD Sounds More Like Analog Audio: NativeDSD Founders Explain

When it comes to SACD as a carrier of DSD (pdm), the analogy that comes to mind is LaserDisc as carrier of analog audio (sometimes CX encoded) . The audio signal on LD was indeed encoded as pits and lands, like SACD. But given the technology of the time, I don’t think high density was feasible. Not sure what would have happened if the whole 12 LD were dedicated to audio only. But using some sort of modulated format. Maybe PSAudio or Ted Smith can elaborate.

Indeed, Beta and VHS hifi were AFM, but the modulation noise added “pumping” distortion. An engineer from the Netherlands supposedly figured out a way to modify VHS/Beta hifi to very high quality master tape stds:

Arrrrggggg!!! I can’t post YouTube links in the above post. What’s up with that snag, PSAudio admin???!!!

Anyway, search for these videos in YouTube search bar:

“Why DSD Sounds More Like Analog Audio: NativeDSD Founders Explain”

“VHS modified as high quality audio recorder Part 1 of 3”

Here you go:

I am confused. Why can’t you post YouTube video links? Seems to work fine.

Please try posting a YouTube link now as a test and let me know if you have success.

Vlog link about hifi VCR modded for mastering quality:

Okay, now I can (as in above post). Was getting some strange messages in the OP. It would not let me post any URL links.

BTW, my PSA inbox is fulla weird messages from y’all admin. This is what I see when I click my profile icon (and why I hardly ever post here, including your site rejecting just about all my browsers, except the latest Firefox):

The system initially blocked your posts of YouTube video as it is concerned about spam.

I addressed this and give you permission to post YouTube video URLs.

This should also address the messages you received.

Please let me know if you have further problems.

PM discusses Accessing the DSD layer of an SACD here:

Without PS Audio giving away its IP, can someone give us a few more specs on the connection PM mentions in the video? Such as the data rate flowing thru the transfer cable?

E.g., the RR site notes: “A stereo SACD recording can stream data at an uncompressed rate of 5.6 Mbps; …”

Note the comments in the end of the Moon Audio video about current limitations to streaming; hence why streaming DSD is not practical. Not sure I understood that … because VIDEO demands this (AI generated reply to query about streaming rate for HD video):

For HD video streaming, you generally need at least 3-5 Mbps for 720p HD and 5-8 Mbps for 1080p Full HD, with smoother streaming and better quality requiring higher bitrates, often around 4-8 Mbps for 1080p or even up to 10-12 Mbps for high-frame-rate (60fps) content. The specific rate depends on resolution (720p vs. 1080p), frame rate (30fps vs. 60fps), and video complexity, but platforms recommend speeds from 3 Mbps for basic HD up to 25+ Mbps for 4K, while streaming services like Netflix suggest 5 Mbps for HD.

So an SACD player was capable of these lower-rate DSD speeds, in the player box, in 1998.
