The Grimm MU2 replaces the MK2 DAC, The Airlens, The Preamp, a Roon server, power supplies and power cables. All in one nice little box.
just a one-time investment
buy once, cry onceā¦
Thatās what they say but Iāve ended up buying several times and Iāve never cried. Always smiles in this household.
On topic, my two latest additions: Holo Red and Holo Bliss KTE headphone/pre amp.
All for one nice little(?) price!
Hereās the information I found on it.

Iāll admit to being might interested in the MU2. The thought of being able to eliminate a lot of gear is tempting. But itās (to me) a big chunk of change to include a DAC - which I find still moving a little too quickly technology wise. In a couple or few years if DACs make yet another step up in performance, with a MU2 Iād have to consider leaving well enough alone, or having to replace all that capability with, what? an MU3? That would likely be another big chunk of change. I get the savings part up front, but if at least the DAC were modular Iād feel more comfortable considering it. Just me, not speaking for anyone else. I dunno, I may be completely off base with my logic.
You have to think about it this way Tony, with separates, you have many pieces to upgrade, with the Grimm, only one piece.
True. But a preamp I may upgrade once every 10 years or so, or even longer, now that Iāve hit a level Iām satisfied with in this regard. Preamp technology moves at a snailās pace compared to DACs and streamers.
Preamps aside, upgrading streamers and DACs can cost you a pretty penny. For example the DCS Rossini is already way over the Grimm at $32k. Every piece at the performance level of the Grimm will cost much more. Te Grimm is really a bargain.
A lot of performance/$$ there.
Enjoy.
You would be surprised at what an MU2 can be obtained for. I can show you. It isnāt list price.
One thing I donāt see on the MU2 is a USB digital input. How would you connect a personal computer audio output to the MU2? Analog?
The MU2 manual shows a USB port for external drives but not as a digital input.
Could this be the one?
Sounds great as well.
It most certainly could be. It is beyond my pay grade, but Iām beginning to see the light, a silver may well be in my future. A potential transition from the color of champagne.
I will be patient and wait until I see a 9/10 for $40K.
Nope, no USB in. The MU2 is a Roon Server, Streamer, DAC and Preamp. There is no need for a computer with it as it already is a computer. If you wanted to listen to a computer through it you can use AES/EBU, SPDIF, Toslink, or analog ins. But why would you want to?
I agree with Al. If anything it would be easier to stream to the MU2. Thereās so many good streaming apps. No USB required.
It is a preamp, so sure. But it is also a streamer. Why would you want to stream to a streamer? It is also a DAC. Would you like to hook a DAC up to itās DAC?
I like watching/listening to youtubes and other PC apps through my HiFi system - not for the best music listening, just for better listening than what I get with PC speaker setups. I used analog input to a Strata for years (and recently upgraded to USB) and do not expect great sound from a PC - just better if I can.
I know I may lose my audiophile apprenticeship card for admitting I play my TV and PC audio through my HiFi system probably as much as I stream music.
In anycase, I am very interested in an MU2.
