I love that they are called Sluggos!
Lon (and any other SDFB fellow travelers),
I installed the original copper Sluggo in my P10 and never bothered with the brass one that Mark also sent along.
My main system is 100% digital sources and solid state (amplifier and preamplifier).
I am tempted to try the graphene Sluggo given your comments and a recent follow up review of the SDFB and a variety of Sluggos on the Positive Feedback website.
Can you offer any additional comments on your experience with the graphene, copper and/or brass Sluggos that might push me over the edge and induce me to try a graphene Sluggo?
Regards.
Just got a email from Mark that graphene sluggo is offering 20% discount. I would have tried it but soon I may not need FB at all because my new PZ doesnât have fuses.
After hearing better DACâs recently (at multiple locations in 1 day), i fully realize the limiting factor of the all-in-one DAC i currently have. I connected the A6 back into the system and listened to dsd files plus used my all-in-one as a cd transport with the A6 as a DAC, and (now that my system has been upgraded) fully realize the improvement that low-end DAC makes on my system. Something tells me that now I have heard a bit of better sound that I might want to make a much bigger DAC upgradeâŚdecisions, decisionsâŚ
Donât the components you plug into the darned expensive never to be owned by me power center have fuses? I have SDFBs in my regenerator and also my amp and DAC which plug into the regenerator. I wouldnât want to be without any of them.
The FB I have is 6A Slow rated, so I can only use it for P15. Once PZ is here, I really do not have a need for it anymore. In fact, right now I have M1200 and an Orbi sat. connecting to it only.
Scott,
I have never had the brass nor tried one.
I have used the Super Sluggo (âgold immersedâ), the High Purity Copper Sluggos, the Super Duper Sluggo (rhodium plated) and I have used âsluggosâ from aliexpress that are hollow silver.
I didnât use the Super Sluggo longâit was the one that came with my Fuse Box and it was a tad bright and âhifiâ sounding to my taste. I was told two things by two other users: one that those characteristics would go away in a few weeks, and by another that the High Purity Copper would be the best fit for my system and tastes by a fellow Decware traveler who I had been conversing with for nearly two decades and who knew me well. I asked Mark of Verafi about this and he sent me a High Purity Copper unasked for, I put that in and I liked the sound a lot.
Then other Decware owners using Fuse Boxes started raving about silver âsluggosâ from China. I ordered two, I tried one out, and really liked it for a while. It had a tamer sound, and smooth, it made everything digital sound more analogue, and less âforceful.â Over about a month I found that I wanted a bit more âoomph.â Actually I think for a solid state amp they may be really nice, but for my tube system I was left curious about other variants. I consulted Mark again and he said that his favorite was the Super Duper Sluggo and he sent me one. i kept a silver in my DAC, put the Super Duper in the Regenerator and had a High Purity Copper in the amplifier. The Super Duper seemed to change every day for a few weeks. . . slowly and incrementally improving. . .it finally settled in as a detailed but smooth contender. I really liked this âblendâ (and I confess I moved the Sluggos around a bit and decided that those were the best locations for each Sluggo). I thought âWow, this is great, no further exploration needed.â
But. . . all of a sudden there was a Graphene Sluggo. Knowing how effective Graphene had been in fuses I had used . . . wheels started revolving in my noggin as Mark sent out test Graphene Sluggos to some Fuse Boxers who were giving very positive reports. I asked Mark how he felt about them, he told me that they were now his favoriteâmost resolving and dynamicâand. . . he sent me one in place for some credit he had âgiven meâ that I donât think he had to. (Mark is a fantastic person, generous and so supportive and fully behind his products). I put that in my regenerator, put a High Purity Copper in the DAC and the Super Duper Sluggo in the amplifier, and WOW, surely I was DONE! Great dynamics, smooth sound, pitch black background, seemed to offer a bit more âresolution.â
That brings me to about six weeks later I think and two things happened: Mark announced that his 20 percent discount (about 40 bucks off) for the Graphene Sluggo was ending at the end of this month, and I got the notion that I really should buy another one to see how that influences the sound as Mark had been SO DARNED GENEROUS with me, more so than any other retailer to be honest. So I ordered another Graphene Sluggo and that arrived yesterday and is in the DAC in place of the High Purity Copper Sluggo.
I just have about 23 hours on that Graphene Sluggo, but my initial impressions are that itâs a good replacement: there seems less âpushâ to the sound though still very dynamic and the tonal balance has become just a hair darker and fuller in nature, always what I am looking for.
So now thereâs this little voice in my head that is mumbling âwhat would an all Graphene Sluggo set up sound like?â I am tempted to order another one before the discount period ends. I just sold a Bottlehead preamp that I was not using. . . thereâs a little bit of audio cash available. . . weâll see what I do next week.
In your shoes Scott. . . I think the silver âSluggoâ from China might be a good one to try in your system. I really think for an all digital all solid state set up it might be just right. And. . . honestly I could send you one as I have two sitting idle. As you are not like meâa person who has become addicted to rolling tubes as I have done so for over twenty yearsâitâs an inexpensive way to try a Sluggo out that may make a really positive impact and may be a great place to âparkâ and enjoy for years to come. Or. . . if you want to spend some money and try something that may be a more exciting and extensive change in sound. . . the Graphene Sluggo might be a good experiment to enjoy.
Thank you for the detailed feedback.
If you have a spare that is specified for the PSA P10 Regenerator, I would love to borrow it and take if for a spin. Let me know.
FWIW, I am into removing hash, color, noise, etc. at this stage in my system building quest. Whatever helps âclarifyâ what is in the record and signal chain, and prevent or remove any hitchhiking noise is what I am after.
Donât know if that impacts your thoughts or recommendations on the subjectâŚ
Thanks again.
Scott, the Fuse Boxes are âratedâ for a certain amperage, the Sluggos universally applicable the only limitation being size, i.e. large or small length.
So yes, I have a hollow silver that I can send to you and will do so at one point next week. (Tomorrow morning demo of our kitchen and the construction of a new ceiling with new lighting installed will begin so itâs going to be âone of those weeks.â)
In my experience all the Sluggos pretty much remove noise and give a blacker background pretty much to the same extentâthat seems to be the fuse box itselfâs job. The differences among the Sluggos seem to be subtle tonal balance and subtle dynamic variances.
Thanks.
My first couple of Sluggos I received were too big for the P10. Mark quickly rectified the error though.
Cheers.
Quite interesting that there was a negative review on Stack SmoothLAN in Audiogon forum. Obviously my conclusion is very different from the author. His system is quite nice, but so is mine. So, these lan isolators do not work on all systems (I knew that).
If thereâre other users please share your inputs.
I made a mistake and borrowed a Grimm MU2. It sounds wonderful. Female vocals, which were nice without an MU2, are even nicer. The overall sound is smoother and cleaner. The upper frequencies have an airiness and a delicacy that my all-in-one player/DAC does not come close. I have tried the MU2 as a DAC only and as a preamp (with and without the GAT preamp). I donât have any conclusions on that yet, but like listening both ways, and they sound more similar than different.
Pandoraâs box has been opened.
BTW, I am a bit of a film buff. The above is from the end of Kiss Me Deadly, where the Whatzit is released.
Weâre a funny breed of Lemmings⌠Live with it, as do we!
Now you need to add MU2 to your upgrade list in addition to PowerZone. I suggest you do not borrow a Stealth Sakura cable.
I have to stay away from both PowerZone and Stealth. While I have heard both in another system, i have not had them at home. With the MU2, itâs already too lateâŚ
Baby steps. Letâs learn to walk before we take off and run. Lol
Unifi amps? And a streaming app?
A bunny!
