I’ve enjoyed a Roon Nucleus Plus server, USB to my PS Audio DirectStream DAC, now the new MK2 version, mostly streaming Qobuz and it sounds awesome. Has anyone taken the plunge and bought the new Roon Nucleus Titan model? If so, thoughts about whether I should or should not upgrade.
How much do you use Roon’s DSP or software like HQPlayer for filtering/DSD upsampling? That will provide a good starting point.
I don’t have my Roon Nucleus Plus do any manipulating of the FLAC stream from Qobuz. My only real interest in doing the upgrade would be to replace a perfectly functioning but aging piece of equipment, the look of the new server is not important to me.
I see Roon is offering a trade-in program for the Nucleus Plus. That is pretty tempting, with $800 just for the box itself regardless of condition.
I would consider how important first party support is, and how important a plug and play solution is. Those seem to be the main reasons to stick to Nucleus. Are you more hands on and willing to tinker with different boxes?
I think you will go further separating your server and your endpoint into separate boxes, both performance wise and financially. I use the Holo Red as the endpoint and (soon) Mac Mini M4 as the Roon core, which provides excellent Roon performance for about $1500 for both boxes. But, I like being hands on and don’t mind doing some configuring on my end to optimize performance. This isn’t the “endgame” by any means but with Holo Red having some of the best jitter performance out there (over USB) I will likely have to spend thousands more to get improvements. Plus, separating the server from endpoint lets you explore the wonderful world of streamers (or gf the Airlens )
