I wouldn’t worry about it. This is not Audiophile Style, most people don’t care about how Maestro works.
Many people believe that ‘Roon doesn’t sound good’. Paul says that he is developing Maestro because of his ‘unhappiness with Roon’s sound’. So that’s the jumping-off point.
Let him complete the project and release it commercially.
The market will decide if it actually sounds better than Roon or other UPNP alternatives.
And Maestro’s architecture will be documented so everyone will understand how it differs (if it does) from other solutions, and how that architecture translates into better sound.
I think the indexing of local files and spotty metadata is the next hurdle.

Since you mentioned food, it reminded me of another example I have often used when discussing listening experiences.
Take beer as an example. From a strictly chemical standpoint, there is virtually no difference between drinking it from a glass and drinking it through a straw. Yet almost everyone instinctively prefers the glass, and our sensory perception consistently reinforces that preference. The experience is not defined solely by chemistry; it is also shaped by the way we perceive it.
Human beings experience the world through five senses. Personally—and I fully acknowledge that this is a subjective view rather than a scientifically proven one—I have always felt that hearing is perhaps the most less sensitive of them. But heightened sensitivity does not mean that every perceived difference can be easily measured, quantified, or fully explained by science. Sometimes the perception of a difference is genuine, even when the mechanism behind it is not yet completely understood.

Just to entertain the idea, this does not deem the best analogy. Straws vs glasses changes the whole experience by a lot, and even changes the way the drink gets mixed with your saliva (never experienced to get drunk easier when drinking alcohol using a straw).
For me, we are talking about different tastes using glasses. You would have to argue that a plastic glass tastes different than a traditional glass. Or to be event more truthful to the debate:tall glasses would make the beer taste different than short ones.
And even these would be bigger differences then the delivery of digital bit-perfect streams to the endpoint.
Just trying Maestro for the first time. Signed on to Qobuz, when playing a high rez album from library it is saying flac 16/44 (zone limit). What am I doing wrong
Try the menu - Devices. Select the device you are playing and do the test there which should work out and set the maximum resolution for your chosen device (zone).
Already have PMG 512 dac set and was set for highest resolution for Qobuz. I’ll play around with it

Nothing wrong on your end — that badge is Maestro telling you about the zone you’re playing to. “(zone limit)” means the output device you’ve selected reports a maximum of 16-bit/44.1kHz, so we deliver the format it can accept rather than pretending. The fix depends on where the music is going: if you’re playing to your computer’s own output, open Devices and select your DAC directly with exclusive/bit-perfect mode enabled and the full resolution will flow. If you’re playing to a streamer or TV, some of them genuinely cap at 16/44. Tell me what device you’re playing to (and Mac or PC) and I’ll point you at the exact setting.

After months of following this thread I mustered up the courage to download and install Maestro this past week. Count me in the camp that hears an improvement in SQ (for whatever reason)! I’ve been using it in, what I would consider, a straightforward manner and haven’t tried features like Ella yet. I’ve encountered a few anomalies but they seem to be less frequent with each subsequent release. I’m not sure if what I am experiencing is known/documented or something new (is there a list of acknowledged open bugs?). In any case, the symptoms I experience on occasion are:
- A song will play for a while and then the sound will stop. The progress bar will show the elapsed time increasing. If left alone, sometimes the music will resume again without any action on my part. Sometimes not. I’ve had cases where Pausing and then resuming Play brings the sound back.
- Similar to the previous item but the song stops prematurely and there is no elapsed time continuation. It’s as if a Stop button was pressed.
- With playlists, I’ve experienced a situation where the first song plays and then the music halts.
Again, these conditions aren’t happening as often as they were when I first downloaded Maestro so the trend is encouraging. BTW… I’m running Maestro on an M1 MacBook Pro in a system that includes an MU2 (MU2 UPnP Renderer) and Kii Threes. Only using Qobuz - no connected NAS at the moment. Are these symptoms known bugs waiting their turn to be squashed?
