Best Inexpensive Tweaks?

senna that is it! No! I never said that! People love to misquote me. I meant if placed under a transducer, IE speaker it will lower said speakers noise floor “up” to 20DB. Only that particular speaker at the speaker folks. Sorry, not the entire room. You must think I am an idiot or something. The stuff stops motion transfer. That is all. It does not defy science. Still, that is very impressive for $1, no? Stillpoints for $800 cannot lower it that much. However it still depends how good your speaker is. It will not do this to a Magico for instance. It will work more on speakers that are less inert. It will work wonders for instance on Bose. Still, on speakers most people can afford it may indeed have positive results. What do you have to lose for $1?

I like my speakers to make noise

Wait, just how does a mat of any kind lower the noise floor of a speaker?

What is a speaker’s noise floor?

It lowers the distortion. Speed, are you ever going to let me off the hook? Trust me, It might just improve your sound. Do you have anything to lose? Please stop challenging me. Either try it or don’t. It would be rather funny if you tried it and loved it. Then would the science really matter? How many Audiophile gimmicks are sold completely based on non scientific principles? I honestly cannot completely explain the science behind this to begin with. I made some measurements. Take them with a grain of salt. I am not an Engineer. I think that has been established.

I think you’re just using incorrect language, that has nothing to do with noise floor… and 20db is rediculously huge, it’s like the difference between background room sound and an isolation chamber, just not possible with any kind of isolation. If you’ve got 20db of “noise” on your speaker channel, there’s no amount of isolation or dampening that’s going to improve that, you’ve got serious problems with your amp!

Basically what you said doesn’t make any sense at all.

I have no idea what @2chan4ever thinks speaker noise floor is, but it is the noise that comes out of a speaker with the amp, preamp, etc., on but with no music being played.

And @SpyderTracks is spot on when he says that “20db is rediculously huge”.

How can a mat lower speaker distortion?

I would stop challenging @2chan4ever but he keeps saying nonsensical things…

The only way I can see some rubberised matting reducing noise by 20db is if it were layered over the speaker drivers with multiple layers thereby physically dampening the sound…

That’s the only way it makes any sense, especially if as he says it was measured?

But I don’t understand why anyone would want to do that?

Am I missing something?

:woman_shrugging:

I’ll leave it there, I don’t need to flog a dead horse, just seems a particularly odd thing for an audiophile with so much money to say.

“Dampening” speakers can be damaging. “Damping” them is a little different.

One of my favorite pet peeves

But the above would be dampening? If you were physically obstructing and absorbing the sound at the source rather than damping by adding isolation material to the chassis to reduce it’s movement?

To dampen is to get something wet

To damp is to reduce or absorb vibration

Ah, ok, I thought absorption and deadening was referred to as dampening, my mistake, thanks for the correction.

I can see that as a system’s noise floor, although it would often depend on the preamp’s volume setting.

I have no idea what a speaker’s inherent noise floor might be and under what conditions it would be measured, or how.

2chan claims his mat idea “lowers distortion,” a different concept entirely, and “he made some measurements.” While I am not holding my breath, perhaps he will share his measurement protocol and the specific results.

Just say no to dampening.

You got me there. No dampening.

My measurements were in no way scientific. Just a couple of meters. I am speaking of vibration. You are correct in that I am probably using the wrong terminology. However I do think a lot of people might find use for this stuff. Just because I had been a jerk in the past does not mean everyone must take every opportunity to berate me. I make mistakes.

What did you measure?

How did you measure it?

I actually picked some up (in black); it’s worth the $4 experiment.

Yah. Line your shelf with it so that you don’t chip the stemware. Good 4 bucks spent there.

As the Thread is for inexpensive tweaks,

How about rather than take the piss maybe we try it in the spirit it was given?
May make a difference, may not…worth a go anyway I’d have thought.

Also,
Worth remembering that English isn’t everyone’s first language, sometimes meaning doesn’t always come across as well as those who’s IS.

With all going on, not really a good time to be raggin’ on somebody who’s trying to contribute, given no-body knows anyone else’s circumstances at home.

Just one man’s $0.02

Thank you gazjam. Only person that ever defended me here.

Elk, I had said how I measured it. A couple of cheap meters.

Come on guy’s. I was only trying to offer something to the thread. Why do you have to attack me? I know I am grandiose. Maybe some people have issues. Did you ever think of that? I got all screwed up because I got a lot of money for nothing. It does more harm than good. It is not the cake you might think. Oh you can say poor rich guy but that is not very nice. It ruined my life. I am just telling you this because the same people constantly badger me. I am not normal. I apologize for embellishing everything I say. There is some truth behind it but I tend to inflate things. I ask of you all to please just be patient.
