Beta Test Impressions for New Stellar Phono Preamp!

Darren made a comment on the forum here, one that surprised me, and it gave rise to a question. All perfectly legitimate. But his comment quickly got puffed into the never-never. Which would be a first here I think. A comment from a PS staffer, a designer no less, getting deleted from the record. Now, if this was a real beta with a closed forum then his concerns on that design point might never have escaped into the big wide world. May I ask Mr Beef @badbeef, did you see what DM said, and have any idea why it got puffed?

I’ve read that message (Darren’s response) well and I’m wondering … it makes me stay again a few months before deciding on a purchase.

It’s a think box here and we must hope that their developer elaborates on it

Not only did you read that particular message before it was deleted, you made a screen shot of it! Par chance it was only up for a brief period before disappearing. When those with the power to puff into the never-never do said puffing it seems they have two levels of puffing power open to them. One where the puff-ee gets a system generated message showing what was puffed. And another higher level where it just disappears without any notification. My question to DM that came about due to his comment that got puffed, well, that received the no notification level of puffing.

Sounds like he was referring to the reason for muting before adjustment of the custom load setting using the pots in the rear, seems valid to me.

I’m curious, when did the long time common sense in audio of turning down the volume, muting or better yet turn the gear off before making changes at the back go out of style. Was it at the same time as the laziness of turning gear off and on with triggers instead of using the power buttons put on the gear for a reason? I have been in this “hobby” for over 50 years and one of the first things I was taught was not to make changes to cables or fool around behind gear with it powered on and now you guys don’t even want to turn the volume down. What happened to basic common sense.

The internet sucked it, along with critical thinking skills, into the vortex of the “glowing oracle”… (my son the physicist’s name for the ubiquitous screens that now command all of our waking moments)

…oops. here I am in front of the …
feeling. weak. fading. fast.

Correct, that’s what I also understood…same with my different brand phonostage and probably any other…I don’t know any without saying: better mute when switching load resistors.

Darren’s post remains. I see no indication it was ever edited in any way. Click here.

Additionally, Michael did not make a screen shot, he merely quoted the post in normal fashion.

OK, understood…I couldn’t see it anywhere after it was pointed out to me that my comment had been deleted. So I stand corrected. In bed with the 'flu for past 24 hours so seeing a bit cross-eyed at the moment.

A designer is well adviser to assume a consumer of his products doesn’t read the owners manual, and secondly, might not display much common sense. And therefore aim to build as much robustness into the products with both those assumptions in mind.

@Elk: Thank-you for that important clarification.

Now, let’s please get back to the Beta testers’ impressions of the phono preamp.

A-effin-men! Thank you, elk

Nope…have difficulty understanding what most of your problems are lately.

Boggles the Mind. Thanks, Elk.

Welcome, your contributions are greatly appreciated. Great looking system and beautiful Stellar stack.

I just referred to Darren’s post. It has not been changed along the way. I want to see if I can make time to review in our country. Still good day, It is never boring to own PS audio products or to be a member of the PS audio family.

More love Michael /Denmark

Thanks, and glad you’re enjoying your Stellar Phono. As for the M700s being “too much” for the room that’s just a misunderstanding a lot of people have (apparently including your dealer). I have several videos on the subject scheduled for a week or so from
now. Here’s the thing, the wattage of an amplifier has nothing to do with gain. It doesn’t matter if an amplifier has 100 watts or 1,000 watts. Both will play at exactly the same level as the other (if their gains are the same).

The M700s give you extended headroom and greater linearity because of their wattage capabilities - and that’s a good thing (and it doesn’t matter what size your room is). So, while I am sure your dealer knows a ton, he’s got this one wrong (and
it’s a common mistake).

Having said that, our amps (in general) are on the high side with gain (at 30). Other amps have lower gain (though none of this is related to watts).

I wouldn’t worry about where the preamp gain is sitting. My common rants about not using the pot in your preamp too much is for people afraid to can it too high for fear it’s like a gas pedal. And yes, we’d like it better if it were 1pm but I
wouldn’t concern myself.

@Brodric: The only thing I can recall that I have that doesn’t function properly is the DMP, though it does what I need it to do. The rest of my PS stuff works fine. My guess is my experience is more typical.

The part I don’t get is not being an owner any more - quite understandable, if I had your experience, I would tend to avoid the brand as well - yet being unable to stop trying to “fix” the company. Life’s too short.
