I’ll take a stab. IMO MQA is a possible feature of a streamer, not a DAC. In the DS Mk I it was a feature of the Bridge, a streamer option to the PWD and DS DACs. For the Mk II it was important to get the streaming function out of the DAC for sound quality reasons, but at the same time PS Audio wanted an external streamer for other reasons too.
