Do You Really Need a Pulse?

I most certainly did, as my intent was and remains as a pointer to the Pulse review. Figures the review noted a slight difference in sound with Roon versus the Innuos Sense app sans Roon. The Pulse is a nice option if it fits one’s budget, and are not inclined to use Roon. The title was intentional click bait.

OK good, I thought I might have been slipping a bit mentally

Nonetheless, I suppose I was answering the question that was in the subject, but I did read the review

From the linked review:

“…via 2 bridged Gigabit Ethernet ports. This bridge means for anyone lacking available Ethernet connections you can simply daisy chain another device off the Pulse (such as in my case my Hegel 190 amplifier/streaming DAC).”

I read this several times and I just don’t understand what is being communicated here.

Maybe you, or someone else here, can explain these sentences to me.

Relatedly, does the Pulse serve as an Ethernet bridge or not?

TIA.

I read the same thing. Think it acts as a data switch. You’ll need one to run the pulse and it gives you the port back for another network device.

Do we really need Innuos?

Nope. Noting wrong with the thread. Posters are being polite and productive.

The thread does however illustrate the problems of employing clickbait titles.

Ive had a Pulsar for just over a week now. Had been using ROON for a few years but my experience was plagued by constant technical challenges (for those that did not follow the thread I have a library that ROON tells me is “challenging” for it).
The pulsar is a great machine and Im very happy with it. The Sense App is great and it enabled me to happily give ROON the boot.
Love the Pulsar and am very happy to no longer be giving ROON my $$$ for a product that was a struggle.
Im patting myself on the back now for finally getting to the point where I dont spew hate against the ROON company for how it handled my library issues etc.

Millions you say? Millions?

No one in this hobby has been known to exaggerate. Absolutely no one.

I am a Roon lifer with no regrets, also interested in the Pulse and Pulsar vs. other comparable streaming options.

About two years ago, in my own modest tests of a U1 Mini + sBooster and Auralic Aries G1, each running the manufacturer applications vs. Roon, Roon sounded better to me. A lot better. Roon’s software was also a lot more capable and usable. It was not close. I wish Roon continued success and do not ache for alternatives.

The prevailing consumer sentiment for Roon is such that PSA is holding up the release of the AirLens for Roon certification. It won’t be available until it works with Roon. Roon is that important.

(LMAO at comments chafing on price given some of the other spends reported on these forums.)

Do I need a Pulse to ditch Roon?

But I still like what I read about Innuos and look forward to hearing a Pulse and/or Pulsar running Roon and Sense. More competition for Roon can only be better for consumers.

Yes. They wish!

It’s like an after dinner ice cream, given only two choices do you prefer vanilla or chocolate. It’s a preference. Only you can answer if you need an Innuos device to hear the difference. When I was in the market about four years back, I did hear the difference. I had auditioned Lumin (discounted the line based on the demo and didn’t care for the sound), Auralic (a buddy’s - and it was fine, Aurender (impressive), and Innuos - ZENith Mk3. I liked the Aurender a whole lot, the INNuos was close enough for me at half the price of the Aurender. Adding an INNUOS re-clocker stepped things up nicely bringing my ZENith near Statement territory. As I have said the ROON feature set didnn’t do much for me, looked cool and worked way better than the INNuos initial interface, but I just didn’t care for it. My choice, my ears in my system(s). The Pulse and the Pulsar are worth consideration at their price point, but I wonder if there is not something out there at a lower price that equals or betters them. With time there will be. I understand the MBS DAC Stream is very good, and have been told it betters the INNuos Pulsar. Have not heard it.

As far as PSA holding off on the Air Lens for ROON certification I say good for them, and consider it a marketing consideration as much as anything. I don’t see PSA effectively creating SW/FW for managing a library or for streaming or creating a solid user interface, it isn’t their strength. So the wait IMO is driven by PSA’s understanding of the current market needs.

That probably would be me.
Bear in mind there is a wide spread of people here, spending wildly varying amounts on their hifi - Roon was too much for me to spend, it’s a valid reason not to get it

More importantly, at the time I wasn’t keen on buying something that didn’t provide for an improved listening experience. Yes there are all types on this forum where availability of funds varies.

To be fair, hackin’ and bashin’ an open source bit of (mostly) unix-oriented bit of software is right up my street anyway, it is not necessarily for the faint-hearted, or indeed for folks who want to just plug n’ play, but with it being free etc. it seems to be incorporated in quite a few “high-end” pieces too so it is an option for everyone

Working well. And there’s SQ differences too to explore. Like Volumio, Ropiee and MoOde. Not just in RPi boxes, but also on the Holo Red. O, that’s a box too?

Aye that looked like a nice piece of hardware, if they got the firmware right

I am tired of waiting for the AirLens. I don’t want Roon, I never wanted Roon, I can live without it’s features and the additional cost. I will never worry about how Roon will or won’t sound in my system. I have only waited this long for the AirLens because I have a trade in credit with PSA. I wonder if the AirLens is delayed due to Roon Certification and also the loss of engineering staff at PSA. I am seriously considering purchasing the Innuos Pulse in the next few weeks, and will be happy with the Sense App.

Do You Really Need a Pulse?
Yes I do, or at least a good plug and play streamer.
