Are you using the Vitus DAC module?
Exactly. No soul, no heart, just precise and clean dull sound. No DCS for me.
It makes me wonder how reviewers who hear so much gear universally seem to praise the lifeless sound of DCS gear. Odd.
I think they listen to the gear, not the music.
No, when I auditioned it I thought it was just ok, especially after inserting an MSB DAC. That was nice.
Sums up my experience with it as well, no soul.
Mayhaps they had the wrong fuse?
I’m so lost I’m feeling my system after spending 20k+ is still not that pleasing to my ears. It fatigues me. I have over the years made so many changes based on recommendations from here and it did improve but I’m still feeling dissatisfied.
My system:
Roon Nucleus (Qobuz) → configured to play through Sonore
PS10 power conditioner and GIK Acoustics
Sonore SE Deluxe → (Curious Evolved) → Matrix SPIDF2 → (AQ Dargon HDMI) → PS MK2 → (Iconoclast XLR) → PS Pre-Amp → (Iconoclast RCA) → Krell Chorus XD → (Iconoclast speaker cable) → Revel F228 Be speaker
I don’t know if it all boils down to me listening to Indian music over Qobuz and even with this type of a reasonable system, I will still get only so much improvement because source music recording is flawed. I don’t know.
I do listen to western music but that does not make me excited because there is no nostalgia in listening to it. My source is all FLAC 48kHz sometimes 24 and sometimes 16 bits.
Can one of you do me a favor, can you listen to this song in your hi-end system and tell me how good was it compared to other tracks you regularly listen? If the source is limited, then I don’t want to pour more thousands into my audio system.
Search for - Mimi (original Motion Picture Soundtrack)
Pick the track - Param Sundari
Please tell me how it was This will me make some decisions.
Could the issue be the beryllium tweeters in the Revel’s?
F228Be | 3-way Dual 8" Floorstanding Loudspeaker (revelspeakers.com)
I got this after raving recommendations here during 2018 timeframe.
I just helped a friend who also described his system as “fatiguing”.
I went thru every connection and found that his system was out of phase. All connections were correct except at his speakers. Double check, it costs you nothing to do so,
@dawkinsj is beryllium known for fatigue?
@RonP any pointers on how to find it and what does out of phase mean? Wrong connection (red to black and black to red)? I have towed in the speakers to get golden triangle ratio.
For some people’s ears it is fatiguing including mine. I bought a pair of highly reviewed speakers with beryllium tweeters several years ago based not only on the reviews but on the recommendations of several people I knew. Only way I found to make them listenable was with a fully tubed system which was a no go for me with the heat in Florida. I sold them to a guy further North with tube amps and he loves them. You may just be one of the people who can’t tolerate the Be tweeter sound. If you can borrow a tube amp from a dealer or a friend that might help you.
What Ron is referring to a in phase is to make sure the connecting cables on all your gear and speakers are + to + and - to -.
@dawkinsj so if I have to get to bottom of this, you mean I should audition non-Be speakers and see if I like it? I get slightly irritated if I stand close to my speakers for 2 minutes. it’s too high pitch for my ears.
If you have the ability to do so fairly easily I would as though not familiar at all with the current Krell amp sound profile I don’t see anything in your system that is inherently forward sounding.
Positive to positive (red to red)
Negative to negative (white to white)
On every component.
To simplify phase, speaker drivers push air and then return to their resting position.
Audio signals from your source that are common to both left and right channels should be pushing air in unison. If the connections are incorrect, that can’t happen and you will sense it.
Let me check now and update.
Meanwhile one of these days please listen to track i posted above to tell me how it sounds… yes people in your household may get confused you listening to Bollywood song
Krell Chorus 7200 XD Multi-Channel Amplifier – Krell (krellhifi.com)
This is the amp I have… i really want to move away from this for 2 channel listening.
According to the review I read in Tone Audio that amp is on the warmer side of neutral so not likely the cause. But if you are going to entertain listening to and maybe changing speakers I would do that first before looking at a new 2 channel amp.
Would you be looking at new speakers in the US or somewhere else? And what price range would you be entertaining for that search?
There was a wrong connection from MK-2 DAC to DS Pre-Amp (left to right and right to left)
@RonP thanks a lot and now it’s a lot better… continuing to check other connections.
You all are God sent…
Now I have been listening like this for 2 years… would it have damaged my speakers or another component in the chain?
I know I was dumb but there is a small improvement PS can do. The left and right label on rear is at the corner in the Pre that I missed it and thought there is no direction and I can connect to any port from DAC they should add left and right channel on both ends of pre-amp given the 5 out connections.
Edit2::
After some more digging, 1 more wrong connection because Iconoclast uses black and white while there is red and black on Krell amp… on right speakers I had wrong polarity again
Such rookie nonsense after so much time on audiophile forums.
