Mark Levinson claimed today that DSD is fake, all recording is PCM, PCM is junk, nothing captures microphones in DSD, and SACD is the same as CD, invented by Sony for copyright protection.
He also claims he is about to introduce a revolution in music format.
Warning, this is a conversation between Levinson and OCD Mikey.
I watched that interview. Mikey said that Mark has never heard the Playback Designs DAC which surprised me. How can he claim that converting PCM to DSD sucks if he hasn’t heard possibly the best implementation of that technology?
That is true. I’ve had a couple encounters with the gentleman during a dealer seminar we hosted and at his Manhattan flat/showroom.
I left both sessions with more questions than vision.
However, you can’t deny he has been successful turning a passion into profit.
OCD responded to a comment that noted Pyramix, saying only the Sonoma can do DSD recording (while also saying he can convert audio tape song to DSD with a Playback Designs device)
Paul has used both Sonoma and Pyramix for Octave Records. At least a couple other DSD creators also use Pyramix.
Had one in the day with Magnaplanar Tympany IVd and Conrad Johnson pre-amp
Sold entire system to help fund design/build/competition of/with this. Skin is kevlar, 3 graphite spars, steel tube fuselage, tricked-out engine and propeller. Empty weight 1,065 pounds, thrust exceeded weight.
Am I the only one confused? Why would anyone run an analog source (audio tape) into a Playback Designs device? Isn’t the PB designs device a digital to analog converter?
He 's kooky. I developed my opinion of him when he first introduced his speakers. He claimed they were “designed to move air while all others are not”. What? Mark, that’s a silly statement.
This C Wave thing of his, if you read the patent, is basically adding digital reverb to the music and it makes it more spacious sounding. Interesting idea but hardly a new format.
I will give Mark credit for his Cello analog equalizer. That was a cool product that took some balls to introduce in the face of popular beliefs against equalizers.
