DSD256 and how it's being played

I’m not sure if this has been mentioned but NativeDSD offers a free DSD256 sampler pack for anyone that wants to test the waters.

Is it correct that a DSD128 can be upsampled and rendered to be a DSD256? This wouldn’t be better than the original so I wonder why someone would bother to do this?

Thanks

@Rob_W there’s a ton of stuff out there that is upsampled stuff. I personally think it’s just false advertising so that they can charge fools who don’t know any better and think they’re getting “high res”

That’s the only rationale I’ve ever been able to come up with.

That what I thought but I didn’t want to come out and suggest it

@Rob_W you’re a good man! :grinning:

My only DAC, the SGCD, is capped at DSD128 (or so I’m given to understand), so I won’t have a use for 256 files.

I’m not sure I could tell a difference unless more changes in the music took place, but would likely give it a shot since I have already paid for said Octave release.

Do you have to tell people to be quiet, and turn off the AC in order to hear the DSD256ness of the recording…just like with any other format? :wink:

Do we need to remember that you have no use for 256 or will you remind us from time to time?

What I really want is a good album that I’ve can get in both DSD64 and 256 without paying twice for it. And then do an A/B on my pretty good system.

I can probably help you with that. I have multiple versions of lots of things. But I only have 30 to 50 256 titles. I’ll do a search and see if I can send you a couple of files that you of course will erase after one listen.

Also, I’m a Roon lifer, to give Paul the deets he’s asking for…

I am a boring disc guy, so don’t really care for d/ls…at least I have not cared until recently. I keep the mostly expired download codes as if it were anything else packaged, but could count the number of times I’ve downloaded on one hand. I was a long time software engineer, and am also younger than 50, so don’t think for a second I find it complicated.

Just how I go about it…I like libraries, too. Big ones.

Yep that’s me also Paul.

  1. Download to archive
  2. Copy to ‘staging’ folder
  3. Edit metadata to suit my library (my version of ‘metadsf.exe’ written in C)
  4. Copy to music library (on Synology NAS server)
  5. NAS server (network share)->
    HQPlayer Desktop (Windows)->
    USB (ASIO)->X-SPDIF 2->HDMI (I2S)->
    DSDAC (Sunlight).

I have only a couple of ‘true’ DSD256 files (at least according to NativeDSD :wink:). Would love to have Octave Records versions of ‘true’ DSD256 files included in the download bundles.

In 1996 I had 2500+ CD’s. I spent eight to ten hours a day, every day for four months ripping everything with Exact Audio Copy. A customized setup. In 2018 or 2019 I met @minnesotafats as he posted a picture of his setup at the time. The view and all. I recognized the view as my town and soon I was sitting in that room. He was all about Roon and Qobuz and Tidal. No way I said. I am a proud non-streamer. Just my own rips and my vinyl collection.

He talked me into trying Qobuz. It caught my attention. But Roon was something I didn’t need. I have a website of my collection that, for a large percentage of my music I have all the art, scanned and cleaned up in Photoshop. I also have the reviews for each album from All Music Guide. (The same source Roon uses)

Long story short I have a lifetime subscription to Roon. I have the priciest subscription to Qobuz and I can download 24.96 and sometimes 24.192 in any format I want. These days I choose AIFF. A full album cost between $7 to $14. Tidal I just have a simple account.

You say you like big libraries? How about pretty much anything and everything? You just lookup what you are interested in and normally you have choices of various versions and various bit rates. And using the magic of Roon Radio, something I thought I would never be interested in, I can have it take over and auto play intelligent selections similar to what I have been listening to. It’s pretty amazing.

I always have the choice to just listen the way I used to. But oh my is it easy to enjoy streaming. New album release? Listen to it the day it is released. When I read music reviews I often listen to the tracks they highlight in the review. It’s quick and pain-free.

Big libraries. I have a very large library. And instant access to the entire library. Does it need to sound better than local files? Nope. Does it? Absolutely!

Just saying……

Happy Cake day Paul!

100% agree with your Al. I tried roon and was hooked. Roon radio I was like ho hum with but it started one day while working and I was like, hey whats that song? then another and another and next thing I knew I was tagging all these songs, and they led to other things. It is like its own rabbit hole. And you dont have to buy, rip and store any of it. I use tidal right now as I use the college kids status to get top end for $10/mo. I really need to move to Qobuz now that its library is pretty much caught up to Tidal for things I like.

I bought a DSD256 version of Jazz at the Pawnshop 2. When I listened to it I was very sad. I’d have been better off with a Sting Dulcimer album. Yeesh!

As my mentor always said, “Ya can’t shine a turd.”

If anyone recalls that pretty good blueprint for the hardware makings of a good NAS thread that was recently discussed, I’d appreciate the name of said thread or link. Was looking around last night but came up short.

Hey, @Paul, I’ve heard good things about bandcamp’s download-ability in an access code way. It was the site used for Peter Gabriel’s 25th releases (that are -btw- thought to be very nice per my SH research). It would save you from needing cloud related stuff, or god forbid local hardware. Love Bandcamp. Why reinvent the wheel? I still won’t be a downloader most likely…heheh.

Happy Friday afternoon! Go get a cocktail.

Bandcamp rocks! You can buy the vinyl copy of a release and be able to download the digital copy in the format of your choice. Sometimes in HD. I prefer Bandcamp as I want the vinyl and the digital and you get both for the same price of the vinyl. Plus the artists get more money from Bandcamp than any other source other than the merch booth at a live show.

Eight, count them eight titles in DSD1024. Thank god one is Patricia Barber eh? I have no clue whatsoever on how one would make use of DSD1024 at this time. Just fill up a 1TB drive with one album? With DSD1024 how many digits are used for a null signal? (As in silence)

I had a couple of DSD512 I bought way back when I had no idea of what those numbers meant. To this date I have not heard of one note from them yet.

Yes you can. Strange but true.
