Dynamic range

Lately, John Darko has been measuring the dynamic range of recordings and reissues. His findings have been a little bit surprising. The latest and greatest remaster/reissue may turn out to be more compressed than the old original. Here’s one of his posts on a fancy new 2 LP deluxe edition of the Talking Heads’ Stop Making Sense.

Not uncommon, unfortunately.

But, as he notes, the mastering quality of an album will always trump its delivery format.

I have been tracking Dynamic Range for many years now. The more you know the less you like.
