I’ve the DVD around here somewhere, and was unaware of it’s rarity having seen it upon initial release. Fits in with some of the dystopian films of its era, Logan’s Run, Andromeda Strain, A Boy and His Dog, Fantastic Voyage, …
To my mind it reflects the American paranoia mindset of the late Nixon Era and Watergate.
Saw One Piece Film: Red yesterday on a whim. I don’t pretend to be a One Piece fan familiar with the crazy quilt cast of characters in the manga series. The plot is, at times, nuts. But the animation is otherworldly with a great vocal score to match. I’ve never seen anything remotely like it. What an experience.
Saw Turn Every Page: the Adventures of Robert Caro and Robert Gottlieb last night. Absolutely engrossing. One of the finest documentaries of its kind I have ever had the pleasure of watching. You needn’t even have read one of Caro’s non-fiction political books (e.g. The Power Broker) to appreciate this gem of a film. Very limited distribution. Screening at only one cineplex in my area. If it is playing anywhere near you, run, don’t walk, to see it while it is running. You’ll walk away thinking you know these two literary giants like they are personal friends (and the film itself leaves you wondering what the definition of ‘friend’ is between two geniuses with big egos to match).
I recently watched Tár. It is quite good, excellent acting.
Also, it is accurate as to classical music and its performance. I am particularly impressed with the use of a rotary valved trumpet for the offstage trumpet part opening Mahler 5 as it is being performed by the Berlin Philharmonic.
