I’m using XLR through the whole chain. From DS DAC to pre and to the M1200’s. So direct comparison between BHK and AV Eclipse was with XLR. I still find it strange that I prefere the AV Eclipse before BHK,maybe I have to try a second time😄after all I presume that the BHK was used for voicing and testing when M1200 was designed🤔.
Thanks for clarification. I’ve been indulging my audio passion for fifty years or so and it seems that every time I think I have a handle on how discrete elements of audio systems are supposed to interact and complement each other, something happens that makes me question orthodoxy. The maxim of “use this with that because it was voiced with that” is one orthodoxy that I definitely question as to universal applicability in all systems. While it’s understandable and reasonable for a manufacturer to voice their components together, that sure doesn’t mean that great pairings aren’t possible outside the “family.” FWIW, all of my components except for the DeHavilland UltraVerve have both balanced and single ended connections and I’ve spent the last couple of days comparing how all my components sound with each connection. In spite of the near universal advice that “balanced is better,” the RCA connections on the BHK pre - PSA M1200s, and Luxman D-08u sound more organic and tonally complete than the XLRs. I do remember reading a professional review in a Hong Kong based audio magazine that stated the Luxman D-06u sounded like two different machines depending on the choice of outputs and that seems to be the case with the D-08u model above it as well.
