I Got To Hear The Direct Stream DAC at the AAVC Meeting- Thoughts

Paul demonstrated the DS last night for our club! THANK YOU PAUL! I must say I'm at a loss for words. To say the DS sounded absolutely stellar is an understatement. It has a natural and organic quality that makes it a joy to listen to. I was off axis, but still the placement of instruments stood out. There was a deep and wide soundstage too. Sure you expect this with a good DAC on axis, but I was not on axis at all. Impressive. The detail was beautiful, and not hi-fi sounding at all. ORGANIC. Nothing was glaring about the sound at all, though you could hear so much resolve, so much detail, but it was not analytical at all. Strangely, nothing stood out- everything about the sound seemed RIGHT. This was a first for me.

Yes, I'll say the Direct Stream DAC IS a game-changer. :D

Steve, welcome to the “RIGHT” club! :smiley:

Everyone will understand “right” when they get the DS.

Game-changer too!

@woot

I agree.

You spelled it out pretty clearly.

Did you steal the DAC? I feel somewhat guilty listening as I write.

Well, just somewhat. :smiley:

I wanted to…

Steve was kind enough to give me two fine looking beers and I put them in my equipment case to enjoy when I got home - only I forgot about the TSA nutjobs at the airport. They caught those suckers instantly and were delighted to take them off my hands. :-((

Sorry Steve, I should have bag checked it and could be enjoying the beers last night.

Thanks for the great write-up.

hmm…interesting, another ‘off-axis’ remark that corroborates what Gordon had said previously.

Not that I’d want the TSA people to enjoy the beer, but it is probably worse - likely ‘destroyed’ like an unclaimed suitcase.

Yet another forum member falls under the spell of the DirectStream DAC. Again, our most recent victim is unable to adequately describe this doggone thing. Jaws are dropping at epidemic rates. There is no cure! =))

Now that I definitely don’t feel so alone I can say:

1) You will know what we mean when you hear it.

2) The achievement is remarkable and there is no going back once you have heard it.

3) This is what we have waited over 30 years for!

4) If you haven’t put your hat in the ring for one, do it, and save yourself the agony. :wink:

Actually, I think the member descriptions have been more than “adequate” and I commend you all. The usual jargon often leaves me cold and no wiser. My reaction tends to be more visceral than analytical so telling me something sounds more “real” or “right” is more than fine.

+1

@stevem2

Finally!

^:)^

Seriously, Will and Woot nailed it.

“You will know what we mean when you hear it.”

Like Potter Stewart and pornography?

haha Steve you just beat me to it!

I’ll have to plead the 5th on that.

edit: I knew of his exploits but had forgotten his quote, perfect.

“hard-core pornography” was hard to define, but that “I know it when I see it.”

@woot

Was a preamp used?

If so, what was it?

I think they went direct DS to Amp and only redbook. {Paul’s post?]

All this talk about jaws dropping makes me wish I was a dentist. Imagine how many DS’ I could afford with all the dental work needing to be done. @-)

@gordon Justice Stewart very much came to regret that quote.

You are welcome! Thanks for coming to demonstrate! Now I can't stop thinking "I can't wait to hear THIS on the new DAC!"

I can't believe some lucky TSA lemming is going to be enjoying your Omne Gang Rare Vos! Next time your in town I'll have to re-treat you to one!
