“Crime of the Century”…over and over again; and again….
ohhh is this Maui?
It’s at Ko Olina; the quieter side (West) of Oahu.
Happy Cake Day, Donald!
Happy Cake day, Donald.
My LHY SW 6 was delivered today. I’m amazed at how heavy the little box is. Since my dealer doesn’t yet have the modules and the fiber optic connection I ordered, I first connected it with an Ethernet cable. I’m curious to see if there is an improvement after burning in and using a fiber optic cable. At the moment I’m sharing my first impression with Al. The Muon Pro gave me an immediate improvement. The next big improvement was the Farad super 10 power supply for my Melco S100 switch in front of the streamer. The Furutech Vault power strip once again ensured increased resolution and soundstage. When I added the LHY SW 10 Switch today, I haven’t noticed any difference so far. Is it possible that once the system reaches a certain level of resolution, the point has come that there is no further improvement? To want more I would probably have to figure out which component is the weakest link in the chain. I could well imagine that a system like Al’s has already reached the top of the mountain and subtle changes like fuses don’t make a noticeable difference. Unless there is still an undiscovered bottleneck somewhere.
I ordered the LHY in gray. Black might have been a better choice? Although a bit of color variation doesn’t hurt. I liked gray better for the switch at the pictures when I ordered it. Later it will be standing next to the modem one floor down in the house anyway.
Greetings Andreas
Very nice, Andreas. I would withhold final judgement until you try the SFP.
Thanks, I’m excited. My plan was to have perfect galvanic isolation using fiber optic cable between my system and the internet path/modem and router. As a power cable I use an Audioquest Hurricane Source that I had left over. I haven’t replaced the fuse yet, just looked at it briefly out of curiosity. Ceramic body with gold-plated caps. Not a run-of-the-mill glass fuse. The LHY seems to offer a lot for its fair price. I still have Audiomagic Ultimate Premiere, SR Purple, SR Master, Hifituning and Padis fuses. Although with slightly higher values than the 1A fuse at 230 V in the LHY switch. But a small selection for testing and playing.
The LHY will also need some time as it plays fresh out of the box. Since I’ve made a lot of changes in the past few weeks, it’s a little difficult. Donald knows that. In my upgrade fever, the next change is already coming if one thing isn’t baked in yet.
Greetings Andreas
How long does the switch take to burn in ?
Should I try another fuse now? The flow direction for attachment in the holder is indicated here.
My upgrades😁 Fuse SR Master (if I already have one left and before it ends up in some drawer), Furutech Lan clear line, Glock connection and other Lan ports closed with caps. Power cable Audioquest Hurricane Source. It should be enough for starters. The SFP modules and the fiber optic cables should then complete the streaming system. And the rabbit hole of streaming will be closed. The SR Master sounds fuller and warmer in the mids than the Schurter, which is installed ex works.
But surprisingly, the switch reacts differently to the SR master backup than in my P10 or the streamer. It sounds full and warm. Do I like this in the long run? What is noticeable in some titles is that the low frequency range sounds fuller but perhaps also less controlled.
I didn’t care for Master fuse in either SW-6 nor SW-10 switch, I liked M-2 better.
When I placed SW-6 in front of SW-10 using ethernet, I don’t recall there was any improvement. SFP did improved the SQ. However, was the improvement mainly from F.O. link, or from SW-6? The switch closer to the streamer would benefit SQ more, hence the better switch should be used here. SW-6 in my case was just used as a Ethernet/F.O. Converter to make sure there was no SQ degradation from the converter itself.
When two switches are used each will have its own clock, and it’s possible the SQ may end up getting worse (I’m not an expert in this). With both LHY switches I could use a clock cable to synchronize them so SW-10 governs. Yes, there was further improvement as a result.
Time to go back to the beach and take a nap🥃
I wish you and your family a nice holiday and relaxation.
I appreciate and respect your dedication Donald but forget the forum enjoy the beach and the golf course. We will hold down the fort till you get back.
FYI Todd @ Tek Audio just told me the SW-10 is discontinued and he won’t be getting any more. But maybe a replacement model in a few months…
Interesting. Seems like a very progressive company I’m sure something new is in the works.
Just took delivery of a SW-10 last week. Must have gotten one of the last few…in black. LHY also just updated the OCK-2 clock to OCK-2S. Improved the OCXO. I bet the new SW-10 gets the updated clock, isolated port of the SW-6 and a price increase. The SW-10 together with the SmoothLAN has elevated my streaming sound. Money well spent.
Thanks for the flow direction diagram. So for a SRPurple fuse it would be “R” towards the bottom?
Yes, S > R should be the direction indicated by the manufacturer. A test in the other direction can’t hurt some components or your own taste. I would be interested to know what the SR Pink in LHY SW-6 sounds like. I have tried the original Schurter, SR Purple, SR Master, AM Ultimat premier and Padis so far. At the moment I have the cheapest Padis fuse in the switch as a test and what I hear is not bad.
Greetings Andreas
My impressions of various fuses in the Switch.
I myself am surprised by my test. Is it because the Switch reacts slightly differently to my previous backup comparisons?
Or is it because my system has reached a new level of resolution due to the many changes in the past two months?
The original Schurter with ceramic body and gold-plated connectors as a base actually fits well with the switch and doesn’t make any major mistakes.
The SR Purple works well in the LHY SW 6, the voices have a bit more body and the treble is a bit softer, the presentation is quite decent.
The Audio Magic Ultimat Premier has a slightly brighter baseline in the mid-range. The bass has more power and the treble have energy. Similar to the original Schurter. The soundstage presentation is clean and nicely staggered in all directions.
I’m a little unsure about the SR Master.
Al and Vmax please don’t laugh now.
Sonically, the SR Master is denser with more warmth across the spectrum. The bass range is more powerful than the original. The treble range is finely rounded with lots of details. Voices and instruments have their own space and separate well. That’s what you would expect given the price. But now I think of the pancake that Vmax mentioned. The soundstage is wide, but somehow I have the impression that the imaging takes place more at the height of my tweeters and midrange drivers. There is not a wall of sound in front of me that opens upwards like with the other fuses. It’s a nice listening experience but like a widescreen film on a TV with black bars at the top and bottom of the picture.
The Padis fuse is the cheapest after the original at around €25. But there are only remaining stocks. The sound is resolving with energy in the treble, perhaps a little cleaner than a standard fuse. The soundstage does not change negatively and the sound image has a little more air. Tonally similar to the standard fuse.
A little more reserved in the low frequency range than the SR and AM fuses. Which isn’t a bad thing if it can get too much.
Maybe an AM M2 would also be a good choice? The Ultimat Premier is a bit bright in the mid-range and the bass range is perhaps a bit too heavy. If the M2 is more balanced in the midrange and doesn’t have an exaggerated low frequency range, it could fit.
I will continue to follow this. The switch has only been playing for me for the second day and still without a fiber optic cable.
I’ll try out a silver/gold HiFi tuning as I still have one lying around. If this works well, there is now a special model with a diamond for around €120. I was told the diamond version should provide even more air and details and the diamond will help the sound to be more harmonious and clean.
Greetings Andreas
Thanks for this! Gonna try a purple I have laying around.
If you still have backups, it’s good to try them out. I wouldn’t have thought that the fuses would have such a big influence on the LHY switch, as after this there is another switch in front of the streamer.
