I have Logitech Media Server (LMS) running on a dedicated (Synology) NAS which connects to my Logitech Squeezebox Touch (SBT) via Ethernet. The SBT drives a PS Audio DLIII via S/PDIF coax digital. I’m thinking about replacing the SBT/DLIII with Direct Stream DAC Jr (DSJ) in the hope of better sound. Will LMS running on the NAS be able to interface with the DSJ? Is anyone using LMS with DSJ? If not, what NAS-based media-server software are people using with DSJ?
Love the Logitech Media Server! I’ve been using it for 12 years and it’s amazing how adaptable it is. I don’t have an answer though to your question if the DSJ will be able to interface with LMS. I’m curious myself.
I just purchased a Stellar Gain Cell DAC. The way I’m using LMS with the SGCD is with a Raspberry Pi. I’m running piCorePlayer on the Pi. I’m using the USB output from the Pi to an iFi iPurifier2 (cleans and re-clocks the USB signal) that’s plugged into the SGCD. It works well. I use my phone/tablet with a LMS client app to control the playback. The important thing is, I’m still able to keep using good 'ol LMS
Can the DSJ be “feed” a stream from one of it’s digital inputs and then play automatically? If so, this could also work for you in a pinch.
There are LMS plug-ins that purport to allow LMS to play directly to UPnP devices, such as the Bridge in the DSJ. I failed in my attempt to get that to work, but I did not spend a lot of time on it.
@partialresponse I recommend checking out MinimServer. I run it on my Melco, which feeds a DS Sr. (via a Matrix X-SPDIF 2). MinimServer is rock-solid, sounds great, is updated frequently, and free (the developer accepts donations). Good luck.
I can’t say for certain if this will work with the DSJ but I don’t see why not. I have been using LMS on a Vortexbox NAS to the DS Sr. w/Bridge (I & II) via Ethernet for years. I use BubbleUPnP interface on an Android tablet or my iPhone. SQ is excellent and virtually indistinguishable from the other I2S or coax/SPDF inputs which I also use.
You would simply plug your coax into the DSJ, as with any other digital source. For a while recently, I was using my Transporter via AES/EBU into the DSJ. I have a mini feeding the DSJ, and that (modded, newer) server was seeing both a local drive, streaming services and the SB/Logitech Server Mini in the basement.
I would imagine it could also work via the Bridge, but I haven’t tried it, as I don’t use the Bridge much (which may have something to do with why I have so few issues with my DSJ?). Does your setup have USB out somewhere? That should also work.
The thing I would warn you about the DSJ is that it is going to make you rethink using the SBT upstream of it ; )
There will be no coax or SBT involved. The NAS (running Logitech Media Server software) will connect via Ethernet to the DSJ (which includes the Bridge II.)
I’m facing this myself next week. I’ve been a happy LMS/Squeezebox user for over a decade but I signed up to trial a new Bel Canto e.one Stream network player. It’s a rare opportunity to see if UPnP actually works. The UPnP bridge plug-in in LMS has a specific set up sequence one has to follow, and I’m not sure if that has to be repeated every time LMS starts.
I’ve been quite happy with LMS as a whole and with iPeng as the controller. Time is running out for my Squeezeboxes though. About two weeks ago I bought an Allo Digione Signature player(raspberry pi). Other than not being attractive, it’s plug and play with LMS as it’s running Squeezelite. It actually sounds terrific. I’ll be interested to see if you’re able to get the DSJ to show in LMS. That’ll be good news for us all.
I bought a DSJ and iPeng does not seem to work. With LMS running on the NAS connected to DSJ via Ethernet through the Bridge II, another App (mconnect) is able to get LMS to stream to DSJ (which it sees as a player,) but iPeng does not see the Bridge II as a player even though it’s on the network. While I’m happy LMS can stream to DSJ I’d like to get iPeng to work if possible since it has a superior interface and access to LMS settings.
