Like you I run the LPS1.2 into the Matrix at 7V and have observed what you have. The Matrix runs at just warm to the touch but the LPS1.2 runs hotter.
From what people are writing about the Farad it would seem that I need to put that on the wish list! 
Tech support told me to stand the LPS 1.2 on its front face advising it would cool better in this way. I found it to be true. I also found a three speed silent fan for very cheap on Amazon that helped even more. A five volt fan that uses a standard USB A port for power. Now my Matrix runs cool.

Question for Matrix SPDIF 2 owners. What would you upgrade first for the Matrix? The USB cable or adding the external power supply? I’m leaning toward the LPS since my USB cable is decent and I’m using the USB for the power supply now. Thanks
Paul, not knowing what your cable is makes it tougher. However, I would say for me the cable made the most difference. I wend from and Audioquest Cinnamon to a WW Platinum Starlight 8. That was a drastic improvement in SQ. I would try to quantify the addition of a LPS (Uptone JS-2) as being maybe 5% of what the cable did. However I never tried the LPS with the Cinnamon.
If you’re on the way down the rabbit hole then it really doesn’t matter the order, you’ll end up doing both anyway. :-0

I found that the USB cable made a greater difference than the HDMI/I2S cable. I now use a Siltech Golden Anniversary USB and a Crystal Cable HDMI for I2S duties. Both cables are silver/gold and the sound is exceptional.

Cables are of great importance and the UpTone LPS 1.2 gave a nice jump up but stating ‘psu is just icing on top’ is definitely putting it way too mildly when plugging a fully charged Farad super3. (AQ diamond usb/AQ diamond hdmi)
I’m using an Audioquest Carbon USB and a AQ Diamond HDMI. I plan on getting a Diamond USB eventually but I’d also like to get an Sbooster. Just flipping the coin since they both cost about the same.
Where did u get the farad?? I’m really thinking about it. Is it sexy?

I opted for 6V with SR Orange fuse, Furutech Rhodium AC inlet and DC cable Level 2 silver (5.5/2.1mm).

I thought since everyone is curious about how it compares with the Sbooster with Ultra and orange fuse, I will be the guinea pig! I will give a report when I get the unit.

i’m also just waiting for 7V Farad 3super to be shipped (they don’t have level2 dc cables at stock).
i’m hoping this will improve over the Uptone LPS1.2 energized with stock SMPS they provide with it. I’m assuming that removing that SMPS itself will bring benefit to SQ and anything on top of it (better filtering of Farad3) might help a bit also.
Strangely enough, when i was experimenting with HDMI/USB cables it did not provided much (or any?) sq improvement in my setup. Maybe because i have short cables (0,5m usb and 1m hdmi) , or maybe because i try to limit ground noise wherever possible. I guess my ears should be resolving enough and also the gear is resolving enough that i can clearly hear difference in OFC vs OCC cables
Apparently now it is in stock. Mattijs told me he will be shipping both the Farad and DC cable today!
Have you tried WireWorld Platinum cables yet? You should hear considerable differences with these over most other cables. The Revelation Audio Labs HDMI is another winner. The short lengths shouldn’t matter.
