Matrix X-SPDIF 2

I am very pleased with the one I have between my DMP and DSD.

they really make some good kit don’t they? At some point i’m gonna have to try out their interconnects between pre/amp/& DS at some point … but right now - I’ll just be happy…

Your description of the hdmi is pretty much my eclipse 7 speaker cables… Detail without being analytical…

I have WW interconnects and I really recommend them.

Today I got a Wireworld Gold Starlight 7 AES/EBU cable (used so hopefully broken in). I hooked it up between the Matrix and the DSDjr, removing the Silver Starlight 7 HDMI cable. It feels like the bass has increased and the soundstage got a little cleaner and better defined. Time will tell. I now have high quality cables to test all the outputs of the Matrix. No batteries yet, sigh.

An update to my Matrix experience. I put the W4S RUR back in the chain before the Matrix and things are sounding more tame, in a good way. Perhaps I’m so accustomed to the RUR that things sounded edgy without it. Also am settling in on the Mocha as it sounds more relaxed and smooth than my cheap toslink. Currently all is passing the mandolin test for edge!

Just bought the red jacket Wireworld starlight 7 HDMI new on Amazon for $104. It’s 3 meters, which may not be ideal but still should be good. Sometimes Amazon has one of a kind specials and I stumbled on this one. Funny thing is I don’t have the Matrix…yet. My DS is still in the approval period and I’m also waiting for issues with the bridge to be resolved by PS Audio. Pretty sure I’ll keep the DS even if I return the bridge but I’ve been waiting to order the Matrix.

I have found the USB feeding the Matrix also has an effect. At this point I am still using the OneConvey HDMI to DS Sr. I have a short Triode Wire “Dongle” USB, a Platinum Starlight USB, and a Paul Peng Red USB. When running straight USB from SonicTransporter to the DS Sr., I had preferred the Platinum Starlight. Currently though, I prefer the body of the Paul Peng from microRendu to the Matrix. All of this somewhat reminds me of tube rolling. Seemingly all the associated pieces have some bit of influence.

Wow, great deal on a per-meter basis, congrats. I paid $120 for a one-meter red-clad Wireworld Starlight 7 HDMI and I thought that was a deal, so $104 for three meters is stupid cheap.

@further how do you like this cable?

I got a .5 meter WW silver starlight 7 from my dealer before the cable got popular. I’m sure I paid retail, but, hey, no complaints about the sound. Incidentaly, at the time, it was said that the .5 meter sounded best. -Don’t know why.

JeffofArabica,

I have been using the “Dongle” from the microRendu to the Rossi LIO DAC 2.0 module of the LIO DHT. I find it a very natural presentation with good detail but not etched. I think it has worked well with the Rossi. I am using the Rossi LIO DHT as a preamp for the DS Sr. With the LIO DAC 2.0, you have a choice of upsampling or running NOS mode. I have been using NOS and go back and forth using Roon to upsample to DSD or leaving in NOS from the microRendu. With the DS Sr., I do not use Roon to upsample. When I switch back to using the LIO DAC 2.0, I will play with testing the “Dongle” vs the Platinum Starlight as well as NOS vs Roon upsampling with both. I really like the Matrix and I2S to DS Sr., so do not believe I will go back to USB to DS Sr., which has been where I used the Platinum Starlight USB. I believe the “Dongle” is a shorter verion of Triode Wire “Discrete” USB. Triode does offer a 30-day trial period for return. I have found Pete, the owner, a good guy to deal with. I have some of the power cables as well. I have found his pricing “reasonable” compared to many companies.

In the course of my Matrix testing, I accidentally played Roon by itself without HQPlayer. It sounded terrible and at first I didn’t realize why. I strongly encourage any Roon users to give HQPlayer a try as Roon’s back end. In my opinion, the improvement in SQ vs Roon alone is equal to or greater than what the Matrix provides. Roon/HQP + the Matrix sounds really good.

How is your battery rig performing? I’m tempted to try it.

(In reference, MagicKnow gives links to battery parts in post 675, and assembly instructions in post 730 in this thread)

Thanks @further. I appreciate the info. I am curious as to how you perceive the NOS of your Rossi vs. the DS DAC Sr.

Hallelujah! :tada:

The Rossi LIO is very good. It is an architecture where you choose the modules you wish. I have not been into vinyl for many years, so did not pursue that module. This is a tube unit, but does not sound like typical tube. It has great clarity but far from lean. I have a Cary SLP-05. It has that fatter, romantic presentation, but does not have the clarity, top end and imaging of the Rossi LIO. I went with the DHT model. Being a tubed unit, tube selection will have influence. I was initially attracted to the LIO for its greater simplicity and reduction of cable needs. I have 4-way active older speakers, and cabling is already a major hassle. I started with the initial DAC 1.0 module and did the trade in to the DAC 2.0 module when it released. DAC 2.0 supports native up to 512 DSD and 768kHz. Vinnie Rossi has released an L2 Preamp for significantly more money and does not have option for headphone amp, which I wanted. He is hinting at some upcoming major upgrade for the Rossi LIO later this year. For me, I find the DAC 2.0 has better imaging and seems more transparent, but I truly do enjoy the DS Sr. and the DSD presentation. The DS Sr. is a very enjoyable listening pleasure. There are so many additional variables in my system that certainly may play a role in my perceived differences. Ted Smith is a modern day Merlin. I anticipate the newer PS DAC in development will be very special.

The microRendu has been very good for both units. I am closely watching the upcoming releases from Uptown Audio on the Ether Regen and Sonore with the Optical Rendu with fiber ethernet.

It is working well at some point I will upgrade my HDPLEX 100W Linear supply with their 400W unit, I will test again to see if it beats the battery

My batteries arrived today so I charged one up and connected it to the Matrix. It seems like black background has gotten even more black. Another odd effect, my preamp steps up volume in one db increments. It feels like I can turn it up forever and it never seems loud. Just buttery smooth. Fun.

I bought two of these and a charger. It will be interesting to see how many hours I can get per charge.

Edit: I have been listening to the battery powered Matrix to my DS Jr for an hour now. My server is playing from my collection randomly. I am stunned at how good everything sounds. Even things that should not sound good sound good. I had a thought that I may not be interested in any further improvements. Too bad as a DS Sr is on the way. Gosh.

Interesting, how are you connecting to the F2 terminals? I’m struggling to find specs of the terminals on their’s (or anyone else’s) websites. Also any info on the charger you bought

Thanks

I went to an auto parts store and bought the proper connectors for the 1/4 inch tab that is each terminal. They look like this:

Except mine were for 22/18 ga and they came in a 20 pack for $3.89

I also used these cables:

I soldered together one of each type, then attached the connectors to the leads of a male Jack. It’s neat and cheap and it sounds swell. Plus there is no need to spend $800 on a power cable to drive the battery.

I made two of the cables with the crimp on red connectors so I can attach one to each battery. Unplug the battery that needs charging and swap in the battery that is charged. Noice.
