Just curious… anyone here appreciates (loves?) Michel Legrand?
I am just listening to LeJazzGrand, the record that starts with Southern Routes. Wow… what a great record. Allmusic gives it only a three stars but I thoroughly enjoy this disc.
BTW, Allmusic gives his 1958 disc Legrand Jazz a 4.5 star rating, this recording with Miles Davis, Coltran, Ben Webster, Bill Evans… is a just WOW disc.
Comments about these discs? Mr Legrand in general?
I confess that one of my guilty pleasures is his soundtrack to “Les Demoiselles de Rochefort” (Young Girls of Rochefort)… the movie is well… meh… the dancing… meh… but oh the music!!!
I had the opportunity to hear him in a trio live at the Keswick outside of Philly years back… just a great show. His playing has way to much chicken fat in it with frilly doilies of melisma… but goodness, the melody… the melody…
Opinions?
Peace
