Modding the DirectStream DAC MKI

Great service!
But my modder would have killed me  Fortunately I’m just enjoying the Lundahls.

Your modder is going to complain himself out of work. I guess you don’t pay him.

You around the corner would certainly be better, but I’m ok with him…and I have another one doing the R6 caps shortly

JK is around the corner from me. Color me lucky!

@jkrichards I don’t use a preamp and set the dac volume control, usually somewhere between 65 and 90. With this change I would need to use the volume in the range 53-78.

Would you expect the mod to be beneficial in my setup? Are the improvements due to the higher output voltage or characteristics of the series configuration?

Thanks for the idea and any advice.

I don’t think the series secondaries would help in your case.

Just a quick note to check if you ever tried output caps instead of transformers?

I Did.
Ended up liking the Jensen transformers better.

Cool. Thanks for sharing. Which caps did you try, do you think any cap would match the Jensens?

As Ted has stated before, the transformer is part of the low pass filter. Using caps would do the opposite. They are a high pass devices.
I tried caps that cost more than the transformers. Sounded way too bright and unpleasant.

Got it. Then, it may be time for me to stop tinkering

It’s never time to stop tinkering.

OTOH I have caps in DAC2. It sounds excellent. T

Sound was good with Lundhal. After doing the c704 mode, some sounds started coming directly from the speaker. The speaker does not disappear as much as before.

@yuriy

Great! Your DAC is not an ordinary DS so not really a fair comparison. Have you measured the frequencies above 50khz? I’m assuming you redesigned the Low pass filter.

We are talking about output series caps replacing the transformers not the C704 parallel caps. We measured the FR before and after C704 and decided to use the C704 as it did indeed sound better and measured better with the LL 1948 transformers installed.
What caps did you use?

I experienced the same thing with the speaker not disappearing as much as before only on certain tracks. I really don’t know what causes it. I thought it might be the Lundhal’s ability to pinpoint where the sound is coming from and a blacker background instead of a general presentation of the sound as with the Edcor’s. The c704 mod is installed on my DAC. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to listen with the LL 1948’s without the c704 caps.

That is remarkable. For me it was the opposite! I listened to the DAC (with Lundahls and VOCM-mod) before the C704 mod and found soundstaging and separation of instruments way better after the mod. For me the most obvious improvement was overall timbre after the C704 installed. I use Wima Film Caps (FKP2C021501I00JI00).

You might want to check the connection of all the caps for the VOCM mod. I had a unit here that did the same thing as you described and turned out one caps had a bad connection.
