Modding the DirectStream DAC MKI

Upgrading the transformers sounds very tempting, but I wonder if it eliminates the possibility of trading it in later towards the DSD mkII?

Somewhere in this thread there’s a statement that says the trade-in will still be honored. I would try to find it, but I have Saturday chores.

They are not likely to give one more than 20 percent of the MK II any how and just bank the remaining value MSRP towards 20 percent off other PS audio equipment. Plus with part shortages you should enjoy a new sounding DAC now.

Thank you @stevem2 and @Vmax for your feedback - I am really considering having the mod done despite the fact that I could lose value at resale. If the mod is that good, this means I could actually get a relatively inexpensive valuable DAC upgrade allowing me to delay a while longer before going for an expensive new DAC purchase.
My problem now is to find a talented electronic technician confident enough, able to and willing to do the upgrade over here in Montreal (Canada).
I can easily find a technician, the problem will be to find a serious one with the skills to do it at a reasonable price.

I wished @wctaudio lived in Canada. May he plans to take ā€œvacationsā€ somewhere nearby in Canada this summer ?
I mean may be with enough interested DSD Sr owners in Canada, it would be worth the trip  …

He’s got to get across the border first! Lots of folks wanting to do that here in Michigan …

Good point …
So, let’s plan for @wctaudio the most optimal summer ā€œbusinessā€ vacation itinerary

Just got on here and noticed this. Sounds so tempting. Haven’t been to Canada since my college days when I and a couple of friends made that long drive from NY to Canada. Been so long ago I don’t even remember what city it was. However, it was in the summer and we went and had a great time at a big reggae concert there.

Michigan can’t be that bad surely, and what is so special about Canada. (I’m just an ignorant Brit)

The Edcor mod is truly awesome. By far biggest improvement possible in the DSS.

Nothing: just that it is easily accessible by car for Americans living near the border (i.e. very affordable transport without the need to go through airport security and wearing masks in an airplane, …) and there are nice things to see and restaurants are affordable with good food and the exchange rate is very advantageous to American citizens and it could provide @wctaudio with profitable opportunities if many Canadian DSD Sr owners were to be interested in doing the mod.
I would gladly make the trip myself to the USA to meet @wctaudio but my problem would be to explain to the border agent why I am crossing the border with CAD$ 7000 DAC : I may have to sign papers and will they let me get it through … I don’t know. I will inquire about that …

If you felt capable (or knew someone who was) you could always disassemble the DAC and just send the board and xformers to Wayne.

Michigan had it’s issues, but we’re improving! Actually the entire US/Canadian border has been closed for about a year, only essential travel permitted. Many families/loved ones are split between countries and they can’t visit. Many people cross the border daily for work, a lot of that has stopped. Hopefully soon we’ll be able to cross again.

Sad to hear about families being kept apart. It always amazes me that Americans can talk about a State like a small town with a single characteristic. To me a State is a massive place that can’t possibly be summed up by a single characteristic, but clearly they can.

Apologies, I just realised you probably meant the City itself, rather than the State.

I thought about what you said I wondered that if I did have the skills to do what you suggest, then may be I would be tempted to do the mod all by myself.
But, I don’t have the skills, so it won’t be an issue  …

Roughly, what is @wctaudio charging for the transformer mod?

I didn’t have the time or inclination to disassemble mine either so I sent it to him complete and he did the whole job for me. Probably if it had been winter time I would have disassembled it but this time of the year there is a whole lot going on in my life.

Send him a private message and he will respond with pricing and shipping information. He is very professional and easy to deal with. Overall a very good experience.

You can get a sense for what would be involved in pulling the analog board from the Direct Stream Upgrade Kit instructions, which should be on the downloads, tools & guides page.

You’d basically just reverse the installation process to the point of where the analog board would be removed. I was lazy and went the same route as Baldy but, having done the PWD Mk I to Mk II and then to the DSD upgrades, it shouldn’t be that hard.

I’ve been listening to the LPSU mod for about 6 hours today. On top of the Edcor transformers and Sunlight this is just spectacular. I don’t know how big an impact it would make in isolation but the dac is elevated greatly. Terrific clarity, timbral richness and musicality. Top to bottom.

I stress for people who are wondering whether the psu mod is worth it (as I was). The answer is YES. My psu is from mpaudio.net and I recommend them.

@billg, which one in particular did you get? Any chance it fits in the case?
